55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, The Texas Commission on the Arts has announced the
77 2011 and 2012 appointments for the positions of State Poet
88 Laureate, State Musician, State Two-Dimensional Artist, and State
99 Three-Dimensional Artist; and
1010 WHEREAS, Honorees are chosen for the exceptional quality of
1111 their work and for their outstanding commitment to the arts in
1212 Texas; nominees must either be native Texans or have resided in the
1313 state for at least five years; in addition, they must have received
1414 critical recognition from state, regional, and national
1515 publications, and they must have attained the highest levels of
1616 excellence in their respective disciplines; and
1717 WHEREAS, David M. Parsons is the 2011 Texas State Poet
1818 Laureate; inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters in 2009, Mr.
1919 Parsons is the recipient of numerous awards, among them a National
2020 Endowment for the Humanities Dante Fellowship to the State
2121 University of New York and the French/American Legation Poetry
2222 Prize; he has published two collections of poems, and his work has
2323 appeared in numerous journals and magazines, including Gulf Coast,
2424 The Texas Review, and Louisiana Literature; and
2525 WHEREAS, The 2011 Texas State Musician is singer-songwriter
2626 Lyle Lovett, who has blurred genre boundaries over the course of 14
2727 albums that deftly combine elements of country, swing, jazz, folk,
2828 gospel, and blues; a four-time Grammy Award winner, Mr. Lovett has
2929 logged significant time at the top of the Billboard charts; he has
3030 branched successfully into acting as well, appearing in 13 feature
3131 films, including several noteworthy Robert Altman pictures, and he
3232 is active in many philanthropic causes; and
3333 WHEREAS, Melissa W. Miller has been selected as the 2011
3434 Texas State Two-Dimensional Artist; acclaimed for her bold,
3535 imaginative, allegorical paintings of animals, she has pursued an
3636 iconoclastic path since the mid-1970s; her works have been
3737 exhibited at many major museums across the nation, including the
3838 Corcoran Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Brooklyn Museum of
3939 Fine Arts, and they have been featured in the Whitney and Venice
4040 Biennials; an associate professor of art at The University of Texas
4141 at Austin, Ms. Miller has also been a visiting lecturer and guest
4242 artist at more than 40 universities, colleges, and art institutes;
4343 and
4444 WHEREAS, Corpus Christi native and Rockport resident Jesus
4545 Moroles is the 2011 Texas State Three-Dimensional Artist; more than
4646 2,000 of his works have found a place in museums and corporate,
4747 public, and private collections; his "Lapstrake," a massive
4848 22-foot, 64-ton abstract sculpture, is located across from the
4949 Museum of Modern Art in New York, and his work was featured in the
5050 landmark traveling exhibition Contemporary Hispanic Art in the
5151 United States; Mr. Moroles has also served on the board of the
5252 Smithsonian American Art Museum and received the 2008 National
5353 Medal of Arts; and
5454 WHEREAS, The 2012 Texas Poet Laureate is Jan Seale, the
5555 author of six poetry volumes and several books of short fiction and
5656 essays; her writing has appeared in Texas Monthly, The Yale Review,
5757 and other periodicals, as well as numerous anthologies, and her
5858 work has been featured on National Public Radio; a popular
5959 presenter, she has given readings and workshops around the country,
6060 and she is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts
6161 fellowship; and
6262 WHEREAS, Billy F Gibbons of ZZ Top fame has been selected as
6363 the 2012 Texas State Musician; a much-imitated guitarist, he is
6464 also the lead singer of the iconic band, which was inducted into the
6565 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, and he wrote many of its
6666 blockbuster hits; he has collaborated with a wide range of artists,
6767 among them B. B. King, Queens of the Stone Age, Roky Erickson, and
6868 Les Paul; in addition, he is a car customizer and actor and plays a
6969 recurring role on the television series Bones as a fictionalized
7070 version of himself; and
7171 WHEREAS, The 2012 Texas State Two-Dimensional Artist is Karl
7272 Umlauf, who grew up in Austin; after completing his master of fine
7373 arts degree at Cornell University in 1963, he began teaching at the
7474 University of Pennsylvania, and his paintings were exhibited in a
7575 number of prominent East Coast galleries and museums; his long
7676 career in higher education eventually brought him to East Texas
7777 State University and then Baylor University; he has won many prizes
7878 and purchase awards for reliefs in a variety of materials,
7979 including fiberglass and cast paper; fascinated with geological
8080 substrata and archeological burial sites as well as salvage yards
8181 and abandoned industrial sites, he has concentrated on imaginative
8282 facades since 2000; and
8383 WHEREAS, Bill FitzGibbons has been selected as the 2012 Texas
8484 State Three-Dimensional Artist; a former Fulbright Scholar, he is
8585 known for large-scale light sculptures that transform building
8686 walls into elaborately programmed spectrums of constantly moving
8787 light; he has received more than 30 public art commissions in five
8888 countries; since 2002, he has served as the executive director of
8989 the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center in San Antonio, and he is a
9090 member of the board of the International Sculpture Center; and
9191 WHEREAS, The men and women who have been selected to hold
9292 these prestigious posts for the next two years have all greatly
9393 contributed to the vibrant cultural life of the Lone Star State, and
9494 Texas is indeed fortunate to be home to these talented artists; now,
9595 therefore, be it
9696 RESOLVED, That the 82nd Legislature of the State of Texas
9797 hereby honor the 2011 and 2012 appointees to the positions of State
9898 Poet Laureate, State Musician, State Two-Dimensional Artist, and
9999 State Three-Dimensional Artist and extend to each of them sincere
100100 best wishes for continued creativity and achievement.
