10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Honorees are chosen for the exceptional quality of |

11 | 11 | | their work and for their outstanding commitment to the arts in |
---|
12 | 12 | | Texas; nominees must either be native Texans or have resided in the |
---|
13 | 13 | | state for at least five years; in addition, they must have received |
---|
14 | 14 | | critical recognition from state, regional, and national |
---|
15 | 15 | | publications, and they must have attained the highest levels of |
---|
16 | 16 | | excellence in their respective disciplines; and |

17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, David M. Parsons is the 2011 Texas State Poet |

18 | 18 | | Laureate; inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters in 2009, Mr. |

19 | 19 | | Parsons is the recipient of numerous awards, among them a National |

20 | 20 | | Endowment for the Humanities Dante Fellowship to the State |

28 | 28 | | gospel, and blues; a four-time Grammy Award winner, Mr. Lovett has |

29 | 29 | | logged significant time at the top of the Billboard charts; he has |

30 | 30 | | branched successfully into acting as well, appearing in 13 feature |

31 | 31 | | films, including several noteworthy Robert Altman pictures, and he |

33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Melissa W. Miller has been selected as the 2011 |

34 | 34 | | Texas State Two-Dimensional Artist; acclaimed for her bold, |

35 | 35 | | imaginative, allegorical paintings of animals, she has pursued an |

36 | 36 | | iconoclastic path since the mid-1970s; her works have been |

37 | 37 | | exhibited at many major museums across the nation, including the |
---|
38 | 38 | | Corcoran Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Brooklyn Museum of |
---|
39 | 39 | | Fine Arts, and they have been featured in the Whitney and Venice |
---|
40 | 40 | | Biennials; an associate professor of art at The University of Texas |

41 | 41 | | at Austin, Ms. Miller has also been a visiting lecturer and guest |

42 | 42 | | artist at more than 40 universities, colleges, and art institutes; |

65 | 65 | | Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, and he wrote many of its |

66 | 66 | | blockbuster hits; he has collaborated with a wide range of artists, |

67 | 67 | | among them B. B. King, Queens of the Stone Age, Roky Erickson, and |

68 | 68 | | Les Paul; in addition, he is a car customizer and actor and plays a |

69 | 69 | | recurring role on the television series Bones as a fictionalized |

71 | 71 | | WHEREAS, The 2012 Texas State Two-Dimensional Artist is Karl |

74 | 74 | | University of Pennsylvania, and his paintings were exhibited in a |

75 | 75 | | number of prominent East Coast galleries and museums; his long |

76 | 76 | | career in higher education eventually brought him to East Texas |

77 | 77 | | State University and then Baylor University; he has won many prizes |

78 | 78 | | and purchase awards for reliefs in a variety of materials, |

79 | 79 | | including fiberglass and cast paper; fascinated with geological |

80 | 80 | | substrata and archeological burial sites as well as salvage yards |

83 | 83 | | WHEREAS, Bill FitzGibbons has been selected as the 2012 Texas |

86 | 86 | | walls into elaborately programmed spectrums of constantly moving |

87 | 87 | | light; he has received more than 30 public art commissions in five |
---|
88 | 88 | | countries; since 2002, he has served as the executive director of |

89 | 89 | | the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center in San Antonio, and he is a |
---|
90 | 90 | | member of the board of the International Sculpture Center; and |
---|
91 | 91 | | WHEREAS, The men and women who have been selected to hold |

92 | 92 | | these prestigious posts for the next two years have all greatly |
