6	6	WHEREAS, The Texas Commission on the Arts has announced the
7	7	2011 and 2012 appointments for the positions of State Poet
8	8	Laureate, State Musician, State Two-Dimensional Artist, and State
9	9	Three-Dimensional Artist; and
10	10	WHEREAS, Honorees are chosen for the exceptional quality of
11	11	their work and for their outstanding commitment to the arts in
12	12	Texas; nominees must either be native Texans or have resided in the
13	13	state for at least five years; in addition, they must have received
14	14	critical recognition from state, regional, and national
15	15	publications, and they must have attained the highest levels of
16	16	excellence in their respective disciplines; and
17	17	WHEREAS, David M. Parsons is the 2011 Texas State Poet
18	18	Laureate; inducted into the Texas Institute of Letters in 2009, Mr.
19	19	Parsons is the recipient of numerous awards, among them a National
20	20	Endowment for the Humanities Dante Fellowship to the State
21	21	University of New York and the French/American Legation Poetry
22	22	Prize; he has published two collections of poems, and his work has
23	23	appeared in numerous journals and magazines, including Gulf Coast,
24	24	The Texas Review, and Louisiana Literature; and
25	25	WHEREAS, The 2011 Texas State Musician is singer-songwriter
26	26	Lyle Lovett, who has blurred genre boundaries over the course of 14
27	27	albums that deftly combine elements of country, swing, jazz, folk,
28	28	gospel, and blues; a four-time Grammy Award winner, Mr. Lovett has
29	29	logged significant time at the top of the Billboard charts; he has
30	30	branched successfully into acting as well, appearing in 13 feature
31	31	films, including several noteworthy Robert Altman pictures, and he
32	32	is active in many philanthropic causes; and
33	33	WHEREAS, Melissa W. Miller has been selected as the 2011
34	34	Texas State Two-Dimensional Artist; acclaimed for her bold,
35	35	imaginative, allegorical paintings of animals, she has pursued an
36	36	iconoclastic path since the mid-1970s; her works have been
37	37	exhibited at many major museums across the nation, including the
38	38	Corcoran Museum in Washington, D.C., and the Brooklyn Museum of
39	39	Fine Arts, and they have been featured in the Whitney and Venice
40	40	Biennials; an associate professor of art at The University of Texas
41	41	at Austin, Ms. Miller has also been a visiting lecturer and guest
42	42	artist at more than 40 universities, colleges, and art institutes;
43	43	and
44	44	WHEREAS, Corpus Christi native and Rockport resident Jesus
45	45	Moroles is the 2011 Texas State Three-Dimensional Artist; more than
46	46	2,000 of his works have found a place in museums and corporate,
47	47	public, and private collections; his "Lapstrake," a massive
48	48	22-foot, 64-ton abstract sculpture, is located across from the
49	49	Museum of Modern Art in New York, and his work was featured in the
50	50	landmark traveling exhibition Contemporary Hispanic Art in the
51	51	United States; Mr. Moroles has also served on the board of the
52	52	Smithsonian American Art Museum and received the 2008 National
53	53	Medal of Arts; and
54	54	WHEREAS, The 2012 Texas Poet Laureate is Jan Seale, the
55	55	author of six poetry volumes and several books of short fiction and
56	56	essays; her writing has appeared in Texas Monthly, The Yale Review,
57	57	and other periodicals, as well as numerous anthologies, and her
58	58	work has been featured on National Public Radio; a popular
59	59	presenter, she has given readings and workshops around the country,
60	60	and she is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts
61	61	fellowship; and
62	62	WHEREAS, Billy F Gibbons of ZZ Top fame has been selected as
63	63	the 2012 Texas State Musician; a much-imitated guitarist, he is
64	64	also the lead singer of the iconic band, which was inducted into the
65	65	Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, and he wrote many of its
66	66	blockbuster hits; he has collaborated with a wide range of artists,
67	67	among them B. B. King, Queens of the Stone Age, Roky Erickson, and
68	68	Les Paul; in addition, he is a car customizer and actor and plays a
69	69	recurring role on the television series Bones as a fictionalized
70	70	version of himself; and
71	71	WHEREAS, The 2012 Texas State Two-Dimensional Artist is Karl
72	72	Umlauf, who grew up in Austin; after completing his master of fine
73	73	arts degree at Cornell University in 1963, he began teaching at the
74	74	University of Pennsylvania, and his paintings were exhibited in a
75	75	number of prominent East Coast galleries and museums; his long
76	76	career in higher education eventually brought him to East Texas
77	77	State University and then Baylor University; he has won many prizes
78	78	and purchase awards for reliefs in a variety of materials,
79	79	including fiberglass and cast paper; fascinated with geological
80	80	substrata and archeological burial sites as well as salvage yards
81	81	and abandoned industrial sites, he has concentrated on imaginative
82	82	facades since 2000; and
83	83	WHEREAS, Bill FitzGibbons has been selected as the 2012 Texas
84	84	State Three-Dimensional Artist; a former Fulbright Scholar, he is
85	85	known for large-scale light sculptures that transform building
86	86	walls into elaborately programmed spectrums of constantly moving
87	87	light; he has received more than 30 public art commissions in five
88	88	countries; since 2002, he has served as the executive director of
89	89	the Blue Star Contemporary Art Center in San Antonio, and he is a
90	90	member of the board of the International Sculpture Center; and
91	91	WHEREAS, The men and women who have been selected to hold
92	92	these prestigious posts for the next two years have all greatly
93	93	contributed to the vibrant cultural life of the Lone Star State, and
94	94	Texas is indeed fortunate to be home to these talented artists; now,
95	95	therefore, be it
96	96	RESOLVED, That the 82nd Legislature of the State of Texas
97	97	hereby honor the 2011 and 2012 appointees to the positions of State
98	98	Poet Laureate, State Musician, State Two-Dimensional Artist, and
99	99	State Three-Dimensional Artist and extend to each of them sincere
100	100	best wishes for continued creativity and achievement.
