 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, The citizens of Pearland and Brazoria County lost a
 devoted community leader with the passing of Thomas Patton
 Alexander, Sr., on September 26, 2010, at the age of 83; and
 WHEREAS, Tom Alexander was born in Galveston on December 29,
 1926, to Charles Hansborough and Helen Drysdale Alexander; he
 attended Alvin schools before serving in the U.S. Merchant Marine
 from 1944 to 1946; he later studied at Shriner Institute, Texas A&M
 University, and Baylor University; and
 WHEREAS, Settling in Pearland in 1949, Mr. Alexander began a
 long and successful career in business, working in real estate, the
 petroleum industry, and rice farming; he helped to develop the
 Golfcrest Country Club and the city's Nottingham and Alexander
 Landing neighborhoods; and
 WHEREAS, This esteemed gentleman further contributed to the
 area as a signer of the city's charter in the 1950s and as an
 original member of the Pearland City Council and the Pearland
 Volunteer Fire Department; in addition, his leadership benefited
 the Pearland Chamber of Commerce, the Golfcrest Country Club, the
 Pearland YMCA, and the Pearland State Bank, which he served as a
 board member for 40 years; and
 WHEREAS, In his leisure time, Mr. Alexander was an avid
 baseball fan who supported the Pearland Little League and followed
 the fortunes of the Houston Astros; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Alexander enjoyed the love and support of his
 wife, the former Bettye Garrett Mathis, whom he married in the late
 1940s; together they shared a fulfilling marriage and were blessed
 with four children, Harriett, Cynthia, Diana, and Thomas, as well
 as seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; Mr.
 Alexander was a member of Pearland Methodist Church; and
 WHEREAS, Tom Alexander dedicated his life to the betterment
 of Pearland, and he will forever be remembered for his outstanding
 efforts in behalf of his fellow residents; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas
 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Thomas Patton
 Alexander, Sr., and extend sincere condolences to the members of
 his family: to his wife, Bettye Alexander; to his children,
 Harriett Alexander Holmes and her husband, Allen, Cynthia Elizabeth
 Alexander, Diana Alexander Holzhauser and her husband, Dennis, and
 Thomas Patton Alexander, Jr., and his wife, Rosslyn; to his
 grandchildren, Marylyn Reed, Alex Holmes, Amy Williams, Jason
 Alexander, Sloan Speck, Kevin Alexander, and Harrison Speck; to his
 great-grandchildren, Luke Holmes, Henry Holmes, Samuel Williams,
 Nicholas Hubbard, Chase Alexander, Kiley Alexander, and Luke
 Alexander; to his brother, Jud Alexander; to his sisters, Mary
 Alexander Bartlett, Sue Alexander Morrison, Patricia Alexander
 Wood, and Elizabeth Alexander Nisbet; and to his other relatives
 and friends; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Thomas
 Patton Alexander, Sr.
