| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Campbellton Post Office in southern Atascosa |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | County, Texas, has played as essential role in the lives of area |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | residents for more than 130 years, but the United States Postal |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Service has placed it on a list of facilities to be closed in 2011; |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, John Campbell established the post office in his |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | general store in 1874, and five years later, moved them both to the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | new town of Campbellton; Mr. Campbell was officially appointed the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | first postmaster and was succeeded over the years by a number of his |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | descendants, including William Campbell, Edward Campbell, Louise |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Campbell, and Alyce Campbell; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Its present postmaster, Lydia Rodriguez Castillo, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | began her long tenure in 1971; a postal service hiring freeze |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | prevents her position from being filled when she retires, yet the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | postal service has targeted the branch for closure in part because |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | it lacks a permanent postmaster; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Residents of the rural area and hamlets served by |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | the Campbellton Post Office rely on it for business communications |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | as well as for their personal mail, and the post office is |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | particularly important to the elderly; if it should close, |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | customers would have to travel some 20 miles to send packages, check |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | post office boxes, or mail important documents; accordingly, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | patrons and civic leaders have formed a committee and started a |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | petition to support the preservation of this integral institution; |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Throughout the history of Campbellton, the post |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | office has been part of the fabric of the community, and its closing |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | would deprive citizens of ready access to vital services and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | diminish their quality of life; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Legislature hereby honor the legacy of public service to the |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | community of the Campbellton Post Office; and, be it further |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the house of representatives hereby |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | respectfully urge the United States Congress to direct the U.S. |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | Postal Service to continue operating the Campbellton Post Office in |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | Atascosa County, Texas; and, be it further |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the chief clerk forward official copies of |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | this resolution to the president of the United States, to the |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | president of the Senate and the speaker of the House of |
|---|
| 45 | 45 | | Representatives of the United States Congress, to the United States |
|---|
| 46 | 46 | | postmaster general, and to all the members of the Texas delegation |
|---|
| 47 | 47 | | to Congress with the request that this resolution be entered in the |
|---|
| 48 | 48 | | Congressional Record as a memorial to the Congress of the United |
|---|
| 49 | 49 | | States of America. |
