                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1239
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 recognize Dr. Melody Johnson, who is retiring as superintendent
 of the Fort Worth Independent School District; and
 WHEREAS, A graduate of Phillips University in Enid,
 Oklahoma, Dr. Johnson earned her master's degree at Texas Woman's
 University and her doctorate at The University of Texas at
 Austin; she joined the Fort Worth Independent School District in
 2005 after serving as superintendent of schools in Providence,
 Rhode Island, where she earned national recognition for her
 successful efforts to improve student achievement by instituting
 long-term systemic reforms and fostering a collaborative
 environment; and
 WHEREAS, During her tenure in Fort Worth, Dr. Johnson has led
 the way in launching a new and relevant curriculum and instituting
 accountability measures and sound business practices; she has
 worked to ensure that the district is prepared for the challenges
 of the future by establishing it as a Digital District; and
 WHEREAS, Innovative and resourceful, Dr. Johnson has worked
 with community leaders to demonstrate how they can have a profound
 impact on school completion and academic success in mathematics and
 science through Project Prevail; she also established the first
 Office of Parent Engagement to promote parental involvement and
 empowerment in the educational process; and
 WHEREAS, She is respected and admired by faculty, staff,
 and students throughout the district for her efforts to make Fort
 Worth's the best urban school district in the nation, and her
 leadership as superintendent of the Fort Worth Independent
 School District will be greatly missed; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd
 Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Melody Johnson on her exceptional
 service as superintendent of the Fort Worth Independent School
 District and extend to her best wishes for continued success in all
 her future endeavors; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
