| 12 | 12 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 13 | 13 | | SECTION 1. Section 1024.053, Special District Local Laws |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Code, is amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Sec. 1024.053. BALLOT PETITION. A person who wants to have |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the person's name printed on the ballot as a candidate for director |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | must file with the board secretary a petition requesting that |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | action. The petition must: |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | (1) be signed by at least 50 registered voters of the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | district as determined by the most recent official list of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | registered voters; |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | (2) be filed not later than 5 p.m. on the same [62nd] |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | day that an application for a place on the ballot must be filed |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | under Section 144.005, Election Code [before the date of the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | election]; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | (3) specify the single-member district [commissioners |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | precinct] the candidate wants to represent [or specify that the |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | candidate wants to represent the district at large]. |

| 29 | 29 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2013. |
