The bill would clarify that public defenders may be appointed to handle writs of habeas corpus applications except those involving the death penalty. Appointment in such cases is already discretionary and this change should not result in any additional attorney appointments.  The Office of Court Administration anticipates that any additional work resulting from the bill could be reasonably absorbed with current resources. Local Government Impact No significant fiscal implication to units of local government is anticipated.
