99 relating to the discharge of a firearm across the property line of a
1010 school.
1111 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1212 SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 62, Parks and Wildlife
1313 Code, is amended by adding Section 62.0122 to read as follows:
1414 Sec. 62.0122. HUNTER AWARENESS OF NEARBY SCHOOL. (a) In
1515 this section, "school" means a private or public elementary or
1616 secondary school.
1717 (b) At the request of a school district, the Texas
1818 Department of Transportation shall:
1919 (1) place signs in appropriate places along state or
2020 federal highways to alert hunters to the proximity of a school; and
2121 (2) act jointly with municipalities and counties, as
2222 appropriate, to place signs along roadways maintained and operated
2323 by a municipality or county to alert hunters to the proximity of a
2424 school.
2525 (c) A school district that requests a sign under Subsection
2626 (b) must pay the costs of the production and placement of the sign.
2727 SECTION 2. Section 62.014, Parks and Wildlife Code, is
2828 amended by amending Subsection (b) and adding Subsection (b-1) to
2929 read as follows:
3030 (b) The department may establish and administer a statewide
3131 hunter education program. The program must include but is not
3232 limited to instruction concerning:
3333 (1) the safe handling and use of firearms, archery
3434 equipment, and crossbows;
3535 (2) wildlife conservation and management;
3636 (3) hunting laws and applicable rules and regulations;
3737 and
3838 (4) hunting safety and ethics, including landowners'
3939 rights and a hunter's personal responsibility as it applies to the
4040 discharge of a firearm.
4141 (b-1) The department shall include, in a hunter education
4242 program established under this section, in any written or
4343 Internet-based information produced by the department for the
4444 public that relates to hunting, and in any curricular materials
4545 that relate to hunting, information on:
4646 (1) awareness of school property and other
4747 surroundings and the danger of discharging a firearm across the
4848 property line of a school; and
4949 (2) personal responsibility as it applies to the
5050 discharge of a firearm.
5151 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2013.
