88 WHEREAS, The Honorable Lloyd Millard Bentsen, Jr., former
99 United States senator and secretary of the Department of the
1010 Treasury, dedicated his life to public service; and
1111 WHEREAS, Born in Mission, Secretary Bentsen graduated from
1212 The University of Texas School of Law and then served his country as
1313 a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945; a recipient of
1414 the Distinguished Flying Cross, he flew 35 missions over Germany,
1515 Romania, and Italy and was shot down twice; he led 600 Allied troops
1616 and guided the operations of 15 bombers, and he attained the rank of
1717 colonel; and
1818 WHEREAS, Secretary Bentsen returned to his hometown after the
1919 war, serving the Rio Grande Valley as Hidalgo County judge until
2020 1948 when he was elected to the first of three terms in the
2121 U.S. House of Representatives; he then enjoyed success in the
2222 private sector before winning election to the U.S. Senate in 1970;
2323 following 22 years in that office, he retired from Congress to
2424 accept President Bill Clinton's nomination as the secretary of the
2525 treasury; and
2626 WHEREAS, Over the course of his long and exceptionally
2727 distinguished career in Congress, Secretary Bentsen played a key
2828 role in the passage of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act,
2929 the creation of Individual Retirement Accounts, and the enactment
3030 of legislation protecting low-income women and children by
3131 providing easier access to health care; his legacy of achievement
3232 earned him numerous accolades, including the Presidential Medal of
3333 Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor; he was recognized by
3434 The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston for his
3535 work to support advancements in medical care for stroke victims;
3636 and
3737 WHEREAS, Secretary Bentsen passed away in 2006 at the age of
3838 85 after having made vital contributions to this state and nation,
3939 and his tireless endeavors in behalf of his fellow Americans
4040 deserve lasting respect and appreciation; naming the Texas
4141 Workforce Commission Building in the Capitol Complex in his honor
4242 would provide a most fitting tribute to his outstanding
4343 accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the 83rd Legislature of the State of Texas
4545 hereby direct the Texas Facilities Commission to rename the Texas
4646 Workforce Commission Building the Lloyd M. Bentsen State Office
4747 Building; and, be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That the secretary of state forward an official
4949 copy of this resolution to the chair and executive director of the
5050 Texas Facilities Commission.
