9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The art of making pies from scratch is a beloved |

10 | 10 | | tradition that has stood the test of time for generations of |

11 | 11 | | families in Texas and beyond; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Historians believe that pie originated with the |
---|
13 | 13 | | ancient Greeks, who developed the first pastry shell; later, the |
---|
14 | 14 | | Romans published the world's first pie recipe, which included |
---|
15 | 15 | | rye-crusted goat cheese and honey, though fillings also included |
---|
16 | 16 | | savory ingredients like meat and seafood; the English brought |
---|
17 | 17 | | mincemeat pies with them as they crossed the ocean to America and |
---|
18 | 18 | | the colonists continued the tradition, using dried fruit, cinnamon, |
---|
19 | 19 | | and nutmeg to season the filling; and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, In Texas, bakers often incorporate local produce |
---|
21 | 21 | | into their pies, from peaches grown in Central Texas to sweet |
---|
22 | 22 | | potatoes grown in the northeastern part of our state; the pecan, the |
---|
23 | 23 | | fruit of the state tree, continues to be one of the most well-known |
---|
24 | 24 | | native ingredients; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, For generations, families have come together to |
---|
26 | 26 | | create and enjoy the fruits of their labor--an exceptionally |
---|
27 | 27 | | American dish, with a special place in our shared culture; by taking |
---|
28 | 28 | | the time to bake pies from scratch, older and younger Texans bridge |
---|
29 | 29 | | the years between them to create new memories and culinary delights |
---|
30 | 30 | | in kitchens across the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
---|
31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the 83rd Legislature of the State of Texas |

32 | 32 | | hereby designate February 16 as Texas Homemade Pie Day; and, be it |

34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That in accordance with the provisions of Section |

35 | 35 | | 391.004(d), Government Code, the designation remains in effect |
