88 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
99 WHEREAS, The art of making pies from scratch is a beloved
1010 tradition that has stood the test of time for generations of
1111 families in Texas and beyond; and
1212 WHEREAS, Historians believe that pie originated with the
1313 ancient Greeks, who developed the first pastry shell; later, the
1414 Romans published the world's first pie recipe, which included
1515 rye-crusted goat cheese and honey, though fillings also included
1616 savory ingredients like meat and seafood; the English brought
1717 mincemeat pies with them as they crossed the ocean to America and
1818 the colonists continued the tradition, using dried fruit, cinnamon,
1919 and nutmeg to season the filling; and
2020 WHEREAS, In Texas, bakers often incorporate local produce
2121 into their pies, from peaches grown in Central Texas to sweet
2222 potatoes grown in the northeastern part of our state; the pecan, the
2323 fruit of the state tree, continues to be one of the most well-known
2424 native ingredients; and
2525 WHEREAS, For generations, families have come together to
2626 create and enjoy the fruits of their labor--an exceptionally
2727 American dish, with a special place in our shared culture; by taking
2828 the time to bake pies from scratch, older and younger Texans bridge
2929 the years between them to create new memories and culinary delights
3030 in kitchens across the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
3131 RESOLVED, That the 83rd Legislature of the State of Texas
3232 hereby designate February 16 as Texas Homemade Pie Day; and, be it
