SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1101 In Memory of Elizabeth Ojerholm Roberts WHEREAS, A rich and accomplished life drew to a close with the passing of Elizabeth Ojerholm Roberts of Lucas on May 13, 2012, at the age of 100; and WHEREAS, Born in Austin on December 1, 1911, to John Melcher and Olga Ojerholm, Elizabeth Ojerholm graduated summa cum laude with degrees in bacteriology and botany from The University of Texas at Austin, and she completed her Ph.D. in 1937; and WHEREAS, She worked in a number of scientific communities in Maryland throughout her career, including the Hood College laboratory, the Walter Reed Medical Center at Fort Detrick, and the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases, and her research included the study of rheumatic fever, anthrax, and Q-fever; after her retirement, she was a volunteer for Frederick Memorial Hospital and for the Historical Society of Frederick in Maryland before moving back to Texas in 2006; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Roberts married fellow bacteriologist Dr. James Lemoyne Roberts in 1937, and the couple became the parents of four daughters, Charlotte, Sandy, Karen, and Joan; after losing her husband in 1974, Mrs. Roberts took comfort in her large and loving family that eventually grew to include 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild; she especially delighted in seeing her grandchildren and their children grow up; she was known for her tenacity, grace, and humor, and in her leisure time, she could often be found tending to her flowers, reading, knitting, or listening to music; and WHEREAS, Elizabeth Roberts was greatly admired by all who had the privilege to know her, and she leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire others for years to come; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Elizabeth Ojerholm Roberts and extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her children, Joan Horak and her husband, Fred, Sandra Roberts and her husband, David Rhoads, and Karen Kent and her husband, Randy; to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild; and to her other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be prepared for her family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Elizabeth Ojerholm Roberts.
