                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 117
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 recognize the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, the
 advocacy affiliate of the American Cancer Society, and its
 dedicated volunteers for their outstanding work toward the goal of
 reducing the occurrence of cancer in our state through advancing
 laws and policies that will make cancer a top priority; and
 WHEREAS, Cancer is the second-leading cause of death in the
 United States and will claim the lives of 580,000 Americans this
 year alone; the annual costs of cancer exceed $200 billion
 nationwide; and
 WHEREAS, Investment in cancer research has paid impressive
 dividends, reducing the death rate and saving thousands of
 lives; and
 WHEREAS, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network
 volunteers across Texas are engaged in numerous activities to
 support the fight against cancer and assist those living with the
 disease; more than 300 Relay For Life events across the state
 engage local communities in working to raise awareness on public
 policy issues important to the fight against cancer; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
 Legislature, hereby commend the American Cancer Society Cancer
 Action Network and its devoted volunteers on their exceptional
 work in fighting this deadly disease and extend to them best
 wishes for continued success in their efforts; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 this outstanding organization as an expression of high regard
 from the Texas Senate.
