SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 15 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Kavita Selva, who has been named a 2013 Google Science Fair finalist; and WHEREAS, The Google Science Fair is an international online competition that encourages students to pursue their inherent curiosity about the world by performing scientific experiments; and WHEREAS, Kavita is a student at Westbrook Intermediate School in Friendswood; she is receiving this prestigious honor for her project entitled Superconductor Tapes: A Solution to the Rare Earth Shortage Crisis; and WHEREAS, In this well-researched and scholarly undertaking, she explores the question of how the magnetic field trapped by a stack of thin film superconductor tapes is influenced by the number and arrangement of tapes in the stack; the experiment also examines how that magnetic field compares with the magnetic field trapped by a bulk monolithic superconductor; and WHEREAS, This project seeks to find a means to solve the problem of a shortage of the rare earths needed to produce the permanent magnets critical to making electric motors; Kavita Selva is truly deserving of recognition for her foresight and hard work in seeking a solution to this vital question; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commend Kavita Selva on her outstanding achievements and extend to her congratulations on being named a Google Science Fair finalist; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
