115 relating to the inclusion of mental health in the public services
126 endorsement on a public school diploma and in information about
137 health science career pathways.
148 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
159 SECTION 1. Subchapter B, Chapter 28, Education Code, is
1610 amended by adding Section 28.02122 to read as follows:
1711 Sec. 28.02122. INCLUSION OF MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONS IN
1812 HEALTH SCIENCE CAREER INFORMATION. The agency shall ensure that
1913 any information provided to students relating to health science
2014 careers includes information regarding mental health professions.
2115 To the extent that the public services endorsement includes
2216 information on health science career pathways, the information must
2317 include mental health careers as a possible pathway.
2418 SECTION 2. Section 28.025(c-1), Education Code, is amended
2519 to read as follows:
2620 (c-1) A student may earn an endorsement on the student's
2721 diploma and transcript by successfully completing curriculum
2822 requirements for that endorsement adopted by the State Board of
2923 Education by rule. The State Board of Education by rule shall
3024 provide students with multiple options for earning each
3125 endorsement, including, to the greatest extent possible, coherent
3226 sequences of courses. The State Board of Education by rule must
3327 permit a student to enroll in courses under more than one
3428 endorsement curriculum before the student's junior year. An
3529 endorsement under this subsection may be earned in any of the
3630 following categories:
3731 (1) science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
3832 (STEM), which includes courses directly related to science,
3933 including environmental science, technology, including computer
4034 science, engineering, and advanced mathematics;
4135 (2) business and industry, which includes courses
4236 directly related to database management, information technology,
4337 communications, accounting, finance, marketing, graphic design,
4438 architecture, construction, welding, logistics, automotive
4539 technology, agricultural science, and heating, ventilation, and
4640 air conditioning;
4741 (3) public services, which includes courses directly
4842 related to health sciences and occupations, mental health,
4943 education and training, law enforcement, and culinary arts and
5044 hospitality;
5145 (4) arts and humanities, which includes courses
5246 directly related to political science, world languages, cultural
5347 studies, English literature, history, and fine arts; and
5448 (5) multidisciplinary studies, which allows a student
5549 to:
5650 (A) select courses from the curriculum of each
5751 endorsement area described by Subdivisions (1) through (4); and
5852 (B) earn credits in a variety of advanced courses
5953 from multiple content areas sufficient to complete the
6054 distinguished level of achievement under the foundation high school
6155 program.
6256 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
6357 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
6458 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
6559 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
6660 Act takes effect September 1, 2015.
