| 12 | 6 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 13 | 7 | | SECTION 1. Section 265.006(b), Occupations Code, is amended |
|---|
| 14 | 8 | | to read as follows: |
|---|
| 15 | 9 | | (b) To qualify for a coronal polishing certificate, an |
|---|
| 16 | 10 | | applicant must have at least two years' experience as a dental |
|---|
| 17 | 11 | | assistant and: |
|---|
| 18 | 12 | | (1) have successfully completed at least eight hours |
|---|
| 19 | 13 | | of clinical and didactic education in coronal polishing taken |
|---|
| 20 | 14 | | through a dental school, dental hygiene school, or dental assisting |
|---|
| 21 | 15 | | program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the |
|---|
| 22 | 16 | | American Dental Association and approved by the board. The |
|---|
| 23 | 17 | | education must include [that includes] courses on: |
|---|
| 24 | 18 | | (A) oral anatomy and tooth morphology relating to |
|---|
| 25 | 19 | | retention of plaque and stain; |
|---|
| 26 | 20 | | (B) indications, contraindications, and |
|---|
| 27 | 21 | | complications of coronal polishing; |
|---|
| 28 | 22 | | (C) principles of coronal polishing, including |
|---|
| 29 | 23 | | armamentarium, operator and patient positioning, technique, and |
|---|
| 30 | 24 | | polishing agents; |
|---|
| 31 | 25 | | (D) infection control procedures; |
|---|
| 32 | 26 | | (E) polishing coronal surfaces of teeth; and |
|---|
| 33 | 27 | | (F) jurisprudence relating to coronal polishing; |
|---|
| 34 | 28 | | or |
|---|
| 35 | 29 | | (2) present proof to the board that the assistant has: |
|---|
| 36 | 30 | | (A) graduated from a dental assisting program |
|---|
| 37 | 31 | | accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the |
|---|
| 38 | 32 | | American Dental Association and approved by the board that includes |
|---|
| 39 | 33 | | specific didactic course work and clinical training in coronal |
|---|
| 40 | 34 | | polishing; or |
|---|
| 41 | 35 | | (B) received certification of completion of |
|---|
| 42 | 36 | | requirements specified by the Dental Assisting National Board and |
|---|
| 43 | 37 | | approved by the board. |

| 44 | 38 | | SECTION 2. As soon as practicable after the effective date |
|---|
| 45 | 39 | | of this Act, the State Board of Dental Examiners shall adopt rules |
|---|
| 46 | 40 | | necessary to implement Section 265.006(b), Occupations Code, as |
|---|
| 47 | 41 | | amended by this Act. |

| 48 | 42 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2015. |
