56 WHEREAS, In 2015, King Ranch, Inc., celebrates the 100th
67 anniversary of its Main House, the ancestral home of the King Ranch
78 family; and
89 WHEREAS, In 1854, Henrietta Chamberlain King came to King
910 Ranch as the young bride of Captain Richard King, and she
1011 established their home in a simple adobe structure on the banks of
1112 Santa Gertrudis Creek; and
1213 WHEREAS, That original dwelling was later replaced by a frame
1314 cottage, and then by a two-story, Southern-style plantation home,
1415 which burned to the ground in 1912; three years later, in 1915,
1516 Mrs. King, who had been widowed in 1885, her daughter Alice, and
1617 Alice's husband, Robert Justus Kleberg Sr., finished building the
1718 Spanish-style Main House of the present day; and
1819 WHEREAS, The new home, which has also served as the ranch
1920 headquarters, was designed by Adams & Adams of San Antonio with the
2021 interior being designed by Tiffany Studios of New York; while the
2122 37,000-square-foot, 27-room structure is grand, dominating the
2223 surrounding landscape, the building was thoughtfully designed to
2324 accommodate the family, cowboys, and travelers alike; and
2425 WHEREAS, In 1961, the United States Department of the
2526 Interior listed King Ranch and the King Ranch Main House in the
2627 National Register of Historic Places; the cultural significance of
2728 the Main House was further acknowledged in 1980, when it received an
2829 Official Texas Historical Marker from the Texas Historical
2930 Commission; and
3031 WHEREAS, Seven generations of the King Ranch family have
3132 called the Main House home, and it has welcomed a host of
3233 distinguished guests, among them prominent citizens and heads of
3334 state; today, it remains a gathering place for the family, as well
3435 as a monument to the memories of Captain Richard King and Henrietta
3536 King; and
3637 WHEREAS, An iconic structure, the King Ranch Main House is an
3738 enduring reminder of the rich ranching heritage of the Lone Star
3839 State, and it is indeed fitting to acknowledge its role in Texas
3940 history at this time; now, therefore, be it
4041 RESOLVED, That the 84th Legislature of the State of Texas
4142 hereby commemorate the centennial of the King Ranch Main House and
4243 extend sincere best wishes for the future to the King Ranch family
4344 and to all the employees of King Ranch, Inc.; and, be it further
4445 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4546 prepared for King Ranch, Inc., as an expression of high regard by
4647 the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
