19	5		WHEREAS, In the 21st century, residents of the Lone Star
20	6		State of all ages, backgrounds, and political persuasions may
21	7		directly address their elected legislators through the use of the
22	8		social media hashtag #txlege; and
23	9		WHEREAS, On Twitter and other online platforms, using #txlege
24	10		enables an engaged citizen to participate in unfiltered democracy,
25	11		sharing his or her beliefs, principles, complaints, and praise on
26	12		all subjects related to the Texas Legislature directly and
27	13		instantaneously with the world; and
28	14		WHEREAS, This ongoing conversation streams endlessly through
29	15		cyberspace, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as individuals,
30	16		political parties, lobbyists, businesses, nonprofit organizations,
31	17		and countless other stakeholders communicate their thoughts about
32	18		current and proposed legislation 140 characters at a time; and
33	19		WHEREAS, These comments can range widely, from the solemn to
34	20		the comical, from the serious to the frivolous, and from the polite
35	21		to the not-so-polite, and taken together, they make up a ceaseless,
36	22		real-time, and sometimes raw but always fascinating
37	23		stream-of-consciousness accounting of what Texans want their
38	24		legislators to know; and
39	25		WHEREAS, Social media is transforming political discourse in
40	26		Texas, across the nation, and around the world, and #txlege
41	27		represents an opportunity for every Texan to follow and participate
42	28		in this dynamic and freewheeling debate of the issues of the day;
43	29		now, therefore, be it
44	30		RESOLVED, That the 84th Legislature of the State of Texas
45	31		hereby designate #txlege as the official hashtag of the Texas
46	32		Legislature.
