184 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
195 WHEREAS, In the 21st century, residents of the Lone Star
206 State of all ages, backgrounds, and political persuasions may
217 directly address their elected legislators through the use of the
228 social media hashtag #txlege; and
239 WHEREAS, On Twitter and other online platforms, using #txlege
2410 enables an engaged citizen to participate in unfiltered democracy,
2511 sharing his or her beliefs, principles, complaints, and praise on
2612 all subjects related to the Texas Legislature directly and
2713 instantaneously with the world; and
2814 WHEREAS, This ongoing conversation streams endlessly through
2915 cyberspace, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as individuals,
3016 political parties, lobbyists, businesses, nonprofit organizations,
3117 and countless other stakeholders communicate their thoughts about
3218 current and proposed legislation 140 characters at a time; and
3319 WHEREAS, These comments can range widely, from the solemn to
3420 the comical, from the serious to the frivolous, and from the polite
3521 to the not-so-polite, and taken together, they make up a ceaseless,
3622 real-time, and sometimes raw but always fascinating
3723 stream-of-consciousness accounting of what Texans want their
3824 legislators to know; and
3925 WHEREAS, Social media is transforming political discourse in
4026 Texas, across the nation, and around the world, and #txlege
4127 represents an opportunity for every Texan to follow and participate
4228 in this dynamic and freewheeling debate of the issues of the day;
4329 now, therefore, be it
4430 RESOLVED, That the 84th Legislature of the State of Texas
4531 hereby designate #txlege as the official hashtag of the Texas
4632 Legislature.
