No. 60 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION WHEREAS, Education is key to both individual opportunity and the advancement of our society, and for three generations, the Garza family of PeƱitas has demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to this vital endeavor; and WHEREAS, Jose and Eva Garza started their life together in this small border community in the 1930s, and they vowed that each member of their growing family would one day earn a degree; with hard work and perseverance, the couple became the proud parents of nine college graduates: Jose Garza Jr., Odilia Garza Ochoa, Yolanda Garza Guerrero, Telca Garza Porras, Jose Guadalupe Garza, Mario Garza, Homero Garza, Diego Garza, and Hector E. Garza; and WHEREAS, The love of learning that was instilled in the Garza children has now been passed on to Jose and Eva's grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and today, 38 members of the Garza family have graduated from college; this remarkable triumph was recognized by the Smithsonian Center for Latino Initiatives, which featured the family in the "Our Journeys/Our Stories: Portraits of Latino Achievement" exhibit at the National Museum of American History; and WHEREAS, With limited means yet a love that knew no boundaries, Jose and Eva Garza charted a course for their family that would lead them into successful careers across many disciplines, and their inspiring story strikes a chord in the heart of every parent who ever dreamed of a better life for their child; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the 84th Legislature of the State of Texas hereby honor the Garza family for their record of accomplishments in higher education and extend to them sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the family as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
