5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Citizens of Waco are mourning the loss of Pat Beard, |

6 | 7 | | who passed away on November 30, 2013, at the age of 88; and |

7 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born in Waco on June 22, 1925, to H. S. and Irna |
---|
8 | 9 | | Beard, Pat Beard attended Waco High School and served in the |
---|
9 | 10 | | U.S. Army during World War II; he went on to earn his bachelor's |
---|
10 | 11 | | degree from Baylor University in 1947 and his juris doctorate from |
---|
11 | 12 | | Harvard Law School in 1950; and |
---|
12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Beard embarked on his distinguished legal career |
---|
13 | 14 | | in 1952, when he began practicing law with his father; |
---|
14 | 15 | | subsequently, he partnered with David Kultgen to found Beard & |
---|
15 | 16 | | Kultgen, and the firm later merged with another partnership to form |
---|
16 | 17 | | Beard, Kultgen, Brophy, Bostwick, Dickson, and Squires; known as a |
---|
17 | 18 | | brilliant attorney, Mr. Beard frequently championed the rights of |
---|
18 | 19 | | the underprivileged and disenfranchised in his more than five |
---|
19 | 20 | | decades practicing law; and |
---|
20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Outside of his professional ventures, Mr. Beard |
---|
21 | 22 | | generously donated his time and expertise to a number of nonprofit |
---|
22 | 23 | | organizations; he was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason and served |
---|
23 | 24 | | on the board of the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children; he |
---|
24 | 25 | | was also a staunch Democrat and supported many local and national |
---|
25 | 26 | | candidates; in his leisure time, he enjoyed playing tennis with |
---|
26 | 27 | | friends; and |

27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, A devoted family man, Mr. Beard shared nearly five |
---|
28 | 29 | | decades with his wife, the former Martha Sue George, whom he married |
---|
29 | 30 | | in 1953 after meeting her on a blind date in Washington, D.C.; |

30 | 31 | | together the couple raised five beloved children, Carey, Mike, |
---|
31 | 32 | | Bramlet, Joe, and Bob; and |
---|
32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Pat Beard brought to his many endeavors compassion, |
---|
33 | 34 | | unfailing integrity, and generosity of spirit, and his legacy of |
---|
34 | 35 | | good works remains to inspire all those who were privileged to share |
---|
35 | 36 | | in the richness of his life; now, therefore, be it |

36 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

37 | 38 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Pat Beard and extend |

38 | 39 | | sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his daughter, |

39 | 40 | | Carey Casey, and her husband, Don; to his sons, Mike Beard, Bramlet |

40 | 41 | | Beard and his wife, Michelle, Joe Beard and his wife, Sherry, and |

41 | 42 | | Bob Beard and his wife, Laura; to his grandchildren and his |

42 | 43 | | great-grandchild; to his brothers, Bramlet and Frank Beard; and to |

43 | 44 | | his other relatives and numerous friends; and, be it further |
