45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Citizens of Waco are mourning the loss of Pat Beard,
67 who passed away on November 30, 2013, at the age of 88; and
78 WHEREAS, Born in Waco on June 22, 1925, to H. S. and Irna
89 Beard, Pat Beard attended Waco High School and served in the
910 U.S. Army during World War II; he went on to earn his bachelor's
1011 degree from Baylor University in 1947 and his juris doctorate from
1112 Harvard Law School in 1950; and
1213 WHEREAS, Mr. Beard embarked on his distinguished legal career
1314 in 1952, when he began practicing law with his father;
1415 subsequently, he partnered with David Kultgen to found Beard &
1516 Kultgen, and the firm later merged with another partnership to form
1617 Beard, Kultgen, Brophy, Bostwick, Dickson, and Squires; known as a
1718 brilliant attorney, Mr. Beard frequently championed the rights of
1819 the underprivileged and disenfranchised in his more than five
1920 decades practicing law; and
2021 WHEREAS, Outside of his professional ventures, Mr. Beard
2122 generously donated his time and expertise to a number of nonprofit
2223 organizations; he was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason and served
2324 on the board of the Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children; he
2425 was also a staunch Democrat and supported many local and national
2526 candidates; in his leisure time, he enjoyed playing tennis with
2627 friends; and
2728 WHEREAS, A devoted family man, Mr. Beard shared nearly five
2829 decades with his wife, the former Martha Sue George, whom he married
2930 in 1953 after meeting her on a blind date in Washington, D.C.;
3031 together the couple raised five beloved children, Carey, Mike,
3132 Bramlet, Joe, and Bob; and
3233 WHEREAS, Pat Beard brought to his many endeavors compassion,
3334 unfailing integrity, and generosity of spirit, and his legacy of
3435 good works remains to inspire all those who were privileged to share
3536 in the richness of his life; now, therefore, be it
3637 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3738 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Pat Beard and extend
3839 sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his daughter,
3940 Carey Casey, and her husband, Don; to his sons, Mike Beard, Bramlet
4041 Beard and his wife, Michelle, Joe Beard and his wife, Sherry, and
4142 Bob Beard and his wife, Laura; to his grandchildren and his
4243 great-grandchild; to his brothers, Bramlet and Frank Beard; and to
4344 his other relatives and numerous friends; and, be it further
4445 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4546 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4647 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Pat Beard.
