5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the |

6 | 7 | | death of John Frederick Gilbert of San Antonio on October 15, 2014, |

7 | 8 | | at the age of 88; and |
---|
8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, John Gilbert was born in the Republic of Panama to |
---|
9 | 10 | | John F. and Susan Hall Gilbert on June 20, 1926, and he attended |
---|
10 | 11 | | school in the Canal Zone; after graduating, he answered his |
---|
11 | 12 | | nation's call to duty and served in the U.S. Navy during World War |
---|
12 | 13 | | II; and |
---|
13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Following his honorable discharge from the navy in |
---|
14 | 15 | | 1946, Mr. Gilbert worked as a civilian employee for the U.S. Air |
---|
15 | 16 | | Force; four years later, he joined the Canal Zone Police Force and |
---|
16 | 17 | | worked his way up through the ranks until retiring as assistant |
---|
17 | 18 | | district police commander at the rank of captain in 1976; that same |
---|
18 | 19 | | year, he moved to San Antonio, where he continued to work for a time |
---|
19 | 20 | | with the Wackenhut Security Company; and |
---|
20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Gilbert enjoyed the love |
---|
21 | 22 | | and support of his wife, Jacqueline, with whom he shared 59 years, |
---|
22 | 23 | | until her death; they were blessed with five children, John, Steve, |
---|
23 | 24 | | Robert, Michael, and Katie, and Mr. Gilbert later welcomed into his |
---|
24 | 25 | | family 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; and |
---|
25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, During his retirement, Mr. Gilbert and his wife |
---|
26 | 27 | | enjoyed dancing as members of the Alamo Area Square and Round Dance |
---|
27 | 28 | | Association, and they co-chaired the committee which sponsored the |
---|
28 | 29 | | national square and round dance convention in San Antonio; the |
---|
29 | 30 | | couple were active as well in their local Catholic parish; |
---|
30 | 31 | | Mr. Gilbert was also an avid bowler, and he was proud of the fact |
---|
31 | 32 | | that over the course of his life, he bowled two perfect games; and |
---|
32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, John Gilbert was deeply devoted to his family, his |
---|
33 | 34 | | faith, and his country, and he leaves behind a legacy that will long |
---|
34 | 35 | | be treasured by all those who held him dear; now, therefore, be it |
---|
35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

36 | 37 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of John Frederick |

37 | 38 | | Gilbert and extend sincere condolences to the members of his |

38 | 39 | | family: to his sisters, Mildred Patton and Mary Urey; to his |
