H.R. No. 1314 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the death of John Frederick Gilbert of San Antonio on October 15, 2014, at the age of 88; and WHEREAS, John Gilbert was born in the Republic of Panama to John F. and Susan Hall Gilbert on June 20, 1926, and he attended school in the Canal Zone; after graduating, he answered his nation's call to duty and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II; and WHEREAS, Following his honorable discharge from the navy in 1946, Mr. Gilbert worked as a civilian employee for the U.S. Air Force; four years later, he joined the Canal Zone Police Force and worked his way up through the ranks until retiring as assistant district police commander at the rank of captain in 1976; that same year, he moved to San Antonio, where he continued to work for a time with the Wackenhut Security Company; and WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Gilbert enjoyed the love and support of his wife, Jacqueline, with whom he shared 59 years, until her death; they were blessed with five children, John, Steve, Robert, Michael, and Katie, and Mr. Gilbert later welcomed into his family 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS, During his retirement, Mr. Gilbert and his wife enjoyed dancing as members of the Alamo Area Square and Round Dance Association, and they co-chaired the committee which sponsored the national square and round dance convention in San Antonio; the couple were active as well in their local Catholic parish; Mr. Gilbert was also an avid bowler, and he was proud of the fact that over the course of his life, he bowled two perfect games; and WHEREAS, John Gilbert was deeply devoted to his family, his faith, and his country, and he leaves behind a legacy that will long be treasured by all those who held him dear; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of John Frederick Gilbert and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his sisters, Mildred Patton and Mary Urey; to his children, John W. Gilbert and his wife, Sheila, Steve Gilbert and his wife, Cathie, Robert "Bo" Gilbert and his wife, Andrea, Michael Gilbert and his wife, Lesa, and Katie Reddout and her husband, Richard; to his grandchildren, Michael Paul, J. Charley, Kyrie, Kaitlynn, Christopher, Madison, and Emilie Gilbert, Mary "Mimi" Fisher and her husband, Felix, Tallon and Cassidy Reddout, and Megan and Tricia Bontempo; to his great-grandchildren, Kila and William Fisher, Kyndell, Neveah, and Nathan Gilbert, Jade and Christian Smith, and Ben Koons; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John Frederick Gilbert.
