H.R. No. 1325
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Mike Hughes is retiring from his position as head
football coach and athletic director at Plano West High School in
2015, drawing to a close a distinguished career in education and
athletics that has spanned three and a half decades; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of Dallas Skyline High School, Mike
Hughes earned a bachelor's degree from Southern Methodist
University and later received his master's degree in school
administration from Texas A&M University--Commerce; he worked as an
assistant coach with the Plano Independent School District for many
years, including service as the offensive coordinator for Plano
Senior High School; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed mentor was named head coach at Plano
West in 2002, and during his outstanding 13-year tenure, he helped
the Wolves reach new levels of achievement on the gridiron; he
guided his 2005 squad to an impressive 10-2 overall record, and in
2012, Plano West made the deepest postseason run in school history,
advancing to the quarterfinals of the University Interscholastic
League 5A Division 2 state playoffs; and
WHEREAS, After returning to the postseason with the Wolves in
2013, Coach Hughes directed his players to a 9-3 record and a
bi-district playoff victory over Keller High School in his final
year at the helm; moreover, the school's other sports teams have
enjoyed notable success with Coach Hughes leading the way as
athletic director; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Coach Hughes has been blessed
with the love and support of his wife, Carolyn, and his children; he
looks forward to spending more time with his family in retirement,
as well as pursuing his favorite hobby, fishing; and
WHEREAS, For 35 years, Mike Hughes has helped teach young
Texans important lessons about teamwork and commitment, and he may
indeed reflect with pride on his many accomplishments as he looks
forward to the next exciting chapter of his life; now, therefore, be
it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Mike Hughes on his retirement as
head football coach and athletic director at Plano West High School
and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and,
be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Coach Hughes as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
