45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Nita Battise of Livingston was sworn in as the new
67 chair of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribal Council on February 23, 2015;
78 and
89 WHEREAS, The council is the seven-member governing body of
910 the federally recognized Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas, a Native
1011 American tribe that has lived in Polk County since the 1850s; and
1112 WHEREAS, Ms. Battise is the third woman to be elected as
1213 chair, and the first chair to be elected directly by popular vote of
1314 the tribal membership; since August 2011, she has served the tribe
1415 as vice chair of the council; and
1516 WHEREAS, This respected leader is a member of a venerable
1617 family with a long history in the tribe, including her grandmother,
1718 Dorcas Battise Bullock, who celebrated her 95th birthday three days
1819 before Ms. Battise was sworn in; and
1920 WHEREAS, Ms. Battise may indeed reflect with pride on the
2021 trust and respect she has earned from the members of her tribe, as
2122 she takes on the challenges and opportunities of her new role; now,
2223 therefore, be it
2324 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
2425 Legislature hereby congratulate Nita Battise on her election as
2526 chair of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribal Council and extend to her
2627 sincere best wishes for success in her important work; and, be it
2728 further
2829 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2930 prepared for Ms. Battise as an expression of high regard by the
3031 Texas House of Representatives.
