H.R. No. 1416 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Nita Battise of Livingston was sworn in as the new chair of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribal Council on February 23, 2015; and WHEREAS, The council is the seven-member governing body of the federally recognized Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas, a Native American tribe that has lived in Polk County since the 1850s; and WHEREAS, Ms. Battise is the third woman to be elected as chair, and the first chair to be elected directly by popular vote of the tribal membership; since August 2011, she has served the tribe as vice chair of the council; and WHEREAS, This respected leader is a member of a venerable family with a long history in the tribe, including her grandmother, Dorcas Battise Bullock, who celebrated her 95th birthday three days before Ms. Battise was sworn in; and WHEREAS, Ms. Battise may indeed reflect with pride on the trust and respect she has earned from the members of her tribe, as she takes on the challenges and opportunities of her new role; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Nita Battise on her election as chair of the Alabama-Coushatta Tribal Council and extend to her sincere best wishes for success in her important work; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Battise as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
