| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Therese Shelton has received the 2015 Ron Barnes |

| 6 | 7 | | Distinguished Service to Students Award from the Texas Section of |

| 7 | 8 | | the Mathematical Association of America; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1915, the MAA is the largest |

| 9 | 10 | | professional society dedicated to advancing the mathematical |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | sciences at the undergraduate level; Dr. Shelton has been honored |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | by her peers for her exceptional efforts to prepare students for |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | careers in mathematics; and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Shelton began her teaching career as an |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | assistant professor at Southwestern University in 1987, and she was |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | made an associate professor in 1994; during her tenure, she has |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | guided many students as they have prepared their work to present at |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | mathematics conferences, encouraging them to go beyond the usual |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | requirements of undergraduate coursework; additionally, she has |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | served as chair of the mathematics and computer science department |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | and the natural sciences division, and she has made presentations |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | at a number of professional gatherings; and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, After developing an interest in mathematics in high |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | school, Dr. Shelton earned a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | University and went on to attain a master's degree and a doctorate |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | from Clemson University; she enjoys spending leisure time with her |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | family and working in her garden, and she is an active member of the |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | Georgetown community; and |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Throughout her years of dedicated service, |

| 29 | 30 | | Dr. Therese Shelton has exemplified the qualities that are the |

| 30 | 31 | | hallmarks of a great professor, and she has earned the respect and |

| 31 | 32 | | admiration of colleagues and students alike; now, therefore, be it |

| 32 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 33 | 34 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Therese Shelton on receiving |
