H.R. No. 165 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Hector Montoya of Dallas has demonstrated compassion, initiative, and maturity beyond his years by leading an effort to put smoke detectors in the homes of needy families and senior citizens; and WHEREAS, Hector, who is nine years old, was upset by news about a deadly house fire in Fort Worth that killed a mother and her six-year-old daughter in January 2014; when he learned that the lives might have been saved if the home had been equipped with a smoke detector, he was moved to action; and WHEREAS, Taking $300 he had painstakingly saved in order to buy himself a PlayStation 4 gaming console, Hector instead used the money to purchase smoke detectors, and he accompanied members of the Grand Prairie Fire Department as they installed the detectors in homes around the community; and WHEREAS, Hector's example led to an online effort that raised more than $7,000, enabling him to buy more smoke detectors to distribute; in addition, other individuals and businesses were motivated to follow his example; and WHEREAS, Hector Montoya's concern for other people and his willingness to sacrifice in their behalf marks him as an extraordinary young Texan, and he is truly deserving of special recognition for the significant contribution he has made to his community and for the way he has inspired others to do the same; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby commend Hector Montoya for working to provide smoke detectors for his fellow Texans and extend to him sincere best wishes for happiness and a bright future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be provided to Hector Montoya as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
