H.R. No. 1770 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Members of the 1990 girls' basketball team from Calallen High School in Corpus Christi celebrated the 25th anniversary of their state championship victory in March 2015; and WHEREAS, The Lady Wildcats entered the 1990 University Interscholastic League 4A state playoffs with only one loss on the year, and the team advanced through the early rounds of the postseason with decisive victories over Uvalde and Edcouch-Elsa High Schools; and WHEREAS, In the regional semifinals, Calallen dominated the team from Kerrville Tivy High School, notching a 57-33 win to continue its thrilling run; with a berth in the state tournament on the line in the regional final, the Lady Wildcats proved up to the task once again, besting Hays High School by one point in a tightly contested game; and WHEREAS, Calallen found itself in another close battle when it matched up against Dallas Lincoln High School in the state semifinals at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin; the teams fought to a stalemate at the end of regulation, but the Lady Wildcats refused to let their season come to an end as they came away with the 68-62 overtime win that set the stage for a title game showdown against Waco Midway High School in the 4A final; inspired by the support of their fervent fans, the Corpus Christi players secured a 46-39 triumph to claim the state championship and close out the year with a 39-1 record; and WHEREAS, Over the course of the 1989-1990 season, the Lady Wildcats relied on outstanding performances from each member of the team: Hope Hodges, Kim Crowley, Amy Acuff, Shana Brown, Stacy Sherman, Ayanna Walden, Leslie Vrana, Tamara Walden, Lisa Salinas, Valerie Clarke, Kelly Cerny, and Paige DuBois; these determined athletes were guided by legendary coach Leta Andrews and assistant coach Mary Lee Stockton, with additional support provided by managers Judith Bryan and Jane Byrne and mascot Miranda Wagner; and WHEREAS, In winning the 1990 state title, the Calallen Lady Wildcats became a source of great pride to the Corpus Christi community, and the 25th anniversary of that unforgettable season is indeed a milestone worthy of commemoration; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the members of the 1990 Calallen High School girls' basketball team on the 25th anniversary of their state championship victory and commend them for their memorable achievement; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
