45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Chicano History Week commences on February 2, 2016,
67 the 168th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe
78 Hidalgo; and
89 WHEREAS, A crucial document in the annals of both the United
910 States and Mexico, the 1848 treaty ended two years of war between
1011 the nations; Mexico recognized the annexation of Texas by the
1112 United States, accepted the Rio Grande as the state's southern
1213 border, and gave up about half of its territory, including
1314 modern-day California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and parts of
1415 Colorado, Nevada, and Utah; and
1516 WHEREAS, Approximately 80,000 Mexicans lived in the ceded
1617 area at the time, and the vast majority chose to become United
1718 States citizens; although the treaty granted protection of their
1819 property and civil rights, decades of land seizures ensued, and by
1920 the end of the 19th century, most Mexicans in the region had lost
2021 their land; and
2122 WHEREAS, The Chicano movement that arose in the 1960s and
2223 1970s focused attention on failed promises of the treaty; Hispanic
2324 civil rights leaders raised awareness of the document's importance
2425 in their struggle to promote social justice for Mexican Americans,
2526 and, in working to gain representation and recognition, they also
2627 developed an enduring consciousness of a long and rich heritage
2728 that continues to inspire us today; now, therefore, be it
2829 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
2930 Legislature hereby recognize February 2-8, 2016, as Chicano History
3031 Week and encourage all Texans to learn more about the enormous
3132 contributions made by Chicanos to the vibrant culture of the Lone
3233 Star State.
