 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Attorney and community leader Derrick Mitchell of
 Houston has been appointed by Governor Greg Abbott to the Board of
 Regents of Texas Southern University; and
 WHEREAS, Mr. Mitchell will serve as one of the nine regents
 of TSU, one of the most diverse institutions of higher learning in
 Texas, with more than 9,700 graduate and undergraduate students
 from around the world; Mr. Mitchell's six-year term will end in
 February 2021; and
 WHEREAS, Since earning his bachelor's degree in finance from
 the University of Houston and his law degree from the University of
 Houston Law Center, Derrick Mitchell has enjoyed a successful
 career as an attorney; he is a partner in the public law section of
 the Houston office of Bracewell and Giuliani LLP, where he works as
 a bond counsel, disclosure counsel, and underwriter's counsel; he
 also has an extensive background in corporate and business
 transactions; and
 WHEREAS, In addition to his professional responsibilities,
 Mr. Mitchell serves as board counsel to a number of community
 colleges, and he is a member of the executive committee of the
 Houston chapter of the National Black MBA Association as well as a
 board member of Scenic Houston, Row House Community Development
 Corporation, and Harris County Improvement District No. 8; he has
 previously served as chair of the Greater Houston Partnership Local
 Relations Committee and as a member of the Texas Securities Board;
 and
 WHEREAS, Higher education in the Lone Star State benefits
 greatly from the leadership and dedication of public-spirited
 individuals such as Derrick Mitchell, and he will undoubtedly be a
 strong and dynamic advocate for the university; now, therefore, be
 it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
 Legislature hereby congratulate Derrick Mitchell on his
 appointment to the Texas Southern University Board of Regents and
 extend to him sincere best wishes for success in his important work;
 and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for Mr. Mitchell as an expression of high regard by the
 Texas House of Representatives.
