H.R. No. 2680 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Diana R. Garland has deservedly been recognized by the board of trustees of Baylor University with the renaming of the institution's School of Social Work in her honor; and WHEREAS, Ms. Garland joined the Baylor College of Arts and Sciences faculty as a professor of social work in 1997; in 1999, the program became a separate department, and she served as chair for four years before being named the inaugural dean of the newly established School of Social Work in 2005; and WHEREAS, In that important position, Ms. Garland has overseen many impressive developments, including the expansion of the full-time faculty from 5 to 20 members, the creation of a Ph.D. program, and the relocation of the school to its own building in downtown Waco; moreover, the school was recognized in the 2012 list of the Best Graduate Schools published by U.S. News & World Report, and in the fall of 2015, it is opening a Houston campus, which will offer a master of social work degree; and WHEREAS, Ms. Garland is concluding her notable tenure as dean on June 1, 2015, at which time she will resume her role as a faculty member; and WHEREAS, Through her leadership, vision, and dedication, Ms. Garland has significantly benefited the Baylor School of Social Work, and she has earned the lasting respect and admiration of colleagues, faculty, and students alike; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Diana R. Garland on having the Baylor University Diana R. Garland School of Social Work named in her honor and extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Ms. Garland as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
