| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Gary Mounce is retiring from The University of |

| 6 | 7 | | Texas--Pan American in 2015, drawing to a close a notable career in |

| 7 | 8 | | academia that has spanned more than half a century; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Mounce earned his bachelor's degree at Oklahoma |

| 9 | 10 | | State University in 1960, his master's degree at the University of |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | California, Berkeley in 1964, and his doctorate at The University |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | of Texas at Austin in 1977, all in political science; and |

| 12 | 13 | | WHEREAS, After working as a teaching assistant at The |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | University of Texas in the 1960s, Dr. Mounce went on to serve as an |

| 14 | 15 | | assistant professor at St. Mary's University from 1968 to 1972, and |

| 15 | 16 | | during that time, he was a visiting professor at Trinity University |

| 16 | 17 | | from 1970 to 1971 and at Incarnate Word College from 1971 to 1972; |

| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Since the fall of 1974, Dr. Mounce has been a member |

| 19 | 20 | | of the political science department at The University of Texas--Pan |

| 20 | 21 | | American, where over the past four decades he has taught a variety |

| 21 | 22 | | of courses in the politics of Latin America; he has also served the |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | department on several committees, and he has been a member of the |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | UTPA faculty senate and the university's Publications Board, |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | Library Committee, Latin American Studies Committee, and |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | International Committee; additionally, he was a visiting professor |

| 26 | 27 | | at Universidad de las Americas in Cholula, Mexico, from 1979 to |

| 28 | 29 | | WHEREAS, This respected educator is a member of the Latin |

| 29 | 30 | | American Studies Association, the Southwest Conference of Latin |

| 30 | 31 | | American Studies, the Western Social Science Association, and the |

| 31 | 32 | | Western Political Science Association, and he is the author of many |

| 32 | 33 | | academic articles and papers, as well as a book, After Santo |

| 34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Mounce's erudition, expertise, and dedication |

| 35 | 36 | | have greatly benefited his students and The University of |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | Texas--Pan American; he has earned the respect and admiration of |

| 37 | 38 | | his colleagues, and he may indeed take great pride in his notable |

| 39 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

| 40 | 41 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Gary Mounce on his retirement |
