H.R. No. 2844
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dr. Gary Mounce is retiring from The University of
Texas--Pan American in 2015, drawing to a close a notable career in
academia that has spanned more than half a century; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Mounce earned his bachelor's degree at Oklahoma
State University in 1960, his master's degree at the University of
California, Berkeley in 1964, and his doctorate at The University
of Texas at Austin in 1977, all in political science; and
WHEREAS, After working as a teaching assistant at The
University of Texas in the 1960s, Dr. Mounce went on to serve as an
assistant professor at St. Mary's University from 1968 to 1972, and
during that time, he was a visiting professor at Trinity University
from 1970 to 1971 and at Incarnate Word College from 1971 to 1972;
and
WHEREAS, Since the fall of 1974, Dr. Mounce has been a member
of the political science department at The University of Texas--Pan
American, where over the past four decades he has taught a variety
of courses in the politics of Latin America; he has also served the
department on several committees, and he has been a member of the
UTPA faculty senate and the university's Publications Board,
Library Committee, Latin American Studies Committee, and
International Committee; additionally, he was a visiting professor
at Universidad de las Americas in Cholula, Mexico, from 1979 to
1981; and
WHEREAS, This respected educator is a member of the Latin
American Studies Association, the Southwest Conference of Latin
American Studies, the Western Social Science Association, and the
Western Political Science Association, and he is the author of many
academic articles and papers, as well as a book, After Santo
Domingo, What?; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Mounce's erudition, expertise, and dedication
have greatly benefited his students and The University of
Texas--Pan American; he has earned the respect and admiration of
his colleagues, and he may indeed take great pride in his notable
career; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Gary Mounce on his retirement
from The University of Texas--Pan American and extend to him
sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Dr. Mounce as an expression of high regard by the Texas
House of Representatives.
