R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Dr. Dorothy McClellan of Texas A&M
University--Corpus Christi has been named a recipient of a 2015
Platinum Remi Award by the 48th Annual WorldFest-Houston
International Film Festival, held in Houston April 10-18, 2015; and
WHEREAS, The university's Regents Professor of Criminal
Justice, Dr. McClellan shared the award with her husband,
Croatian-American filmmaker Nikola Knez, for their documentary
Sunny's Story: Rape as an Instrument of Terror in the Balkan War;
the film includes interviews with victims whose testimony has also
been preserved by the Hague Tribunal and the National Archives of
Croatia; and
WHEREAS, Dr. McClellan worked in Croatia from 2002 to 2004 as
a scholar in the Fulbright Program of the United States Department
of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs; she taught
criminal justice at the University of Zagreb to a generation of
students whose lives had been marked by the horrors of war, and she
interviewed soldiers and survivors of concentration camps; and
WHEREAS, In 2010, Dr. McClellan traveled to Croatia to
organize an international conference for the Alliance of
Universities for Democracy, and in 2012, she returned to the
University of Zagreb as a Fulbright Specialist, conducting research
and teaching about women and criminal justice; she and Mr. Knez
recorded the interviews for their film in 2013, and in that year,
she organized a second international conference for AUDEM; and
WHEREAS, Dorothy McClellan has distinguished herself through
her professional endeavors, and she may indeed take pride in the
recognition accorded her documentary on an important issue in the
field of international justice; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Dorothy McClellan on her
receipt of a 2015 Platinum Remi Award from the 48th Annual
WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival and extend to her
sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Dr. McClellan as an expression of high regard by the
Texas House of Representatives.
