| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Sylvester Perez is retiring as superintendent |

| 6 | 7 | | of the San Antonio Independent School District in May 2015, drawing |

| 7 | 8 | | to a close a notable career in education that has spanned more than |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | four decades; and |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, A native of San Antonio, Dr. Perez studied health, |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | physical education, and history at New Mexico Highlands University, |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | where he was also an All-American player for the school's baseball |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | team, setting a home run record that stood for 29 years; he earned |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | his bachelor's degree in 1972 and his master's degree in health and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | physical education in 1978; in 1995, he earned a doctorate in |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | educational administration from Texas A&M University; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, During the course of his exemplary 40-year career, |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | Dr. Perez worked as a history teacher for 13 years, and he was also |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | a baseball coach, an athletic director, an assistant principal, and |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | a principal; before joining San Antonio ISD, he served as |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | superintendent in Mathis, Clint, San Marcos, and Midland, taking a |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | leading role in increasing the rate of college-bound students in |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | each of these districts; he became interim superintendent of San |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | Antonio ISD in 2012 and was appointed as the district's 18th |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | superintendent in June 2013; and |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, In addition, Dr. Perez has been an adjunct professor |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | at Texas A&M University--Kingsville and The University of Texas of |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | the Permian Basin, and he is currently an adjunct professor in the |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | Cooperative Superintendent Program at The University of Texas at |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | Austin; he was the first Hispanic to be elected to the Legislative |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | Council of the University Interscholastic League, and in 2006, he |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | was one of five finalists for Texas Superintendent of the Year; he |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | is a Distinguished Alumnus of New Mexico Highlands University and a |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | member of that school's Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2013, he was |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | inducted into the National Hispanic Hall of Honor; and |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Perez's dedication, professionalism, and |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | commitment to excellence have greatly benefited the students of all |
|---|
| 37 | 38 | | the districts where he has worked and earned him the respect and |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | admiration of his fellow educators, and he may indeed reflect with |
|---|
| 39 | 40 | | pride on a career well-spent as he embarks upon the next exciting |
|---|
| 40 | 41 | | chapter of his life; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 41 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|---|
| 42 | 43 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Sylvester Perez on his |
|---|
| 43 | 44 | | retirement as superintendent of the San Antonio Independent School |
|---|
| 44 | 45 | | District and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued |

| 45 | 46 | | happiness; and, be it further |
