H.R. No. 2901 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Dr. Sylvester Perez is retiring as superintendent of the San Antonio Independent School District in May 2015, drawing to a close a notable career in education that has spanned more than four decades; and WHEREAS, A native of San Antonio, Dr. Perez studied health, physical education, and history at New Mexico Highlands University, where he was also an All-American player for the school's baseball team, setting a home run record that stood for 29 years; he earned his bachelor's degree in 1972 and his master's degree in health and physical education in 1978; in 1995, he earned a doctorate in educational administration from Texas A&M University; and WHEREAS, During the course of his exemplary 40-year career, Dr. Perez worked as a history teacher for 13 years, and he was also a baseball coach, an athletic director, an assistant principal, and a principal; before joining San Antonio ISD, he served as superintendent in Mathis, Clint, San Marcos, and Midland, taking a leading role in increasing the rate of college-bound students in each of these districts; he became interim superintendent of San Antonio ISD in 2012 and was appointed as the district's 18th superintendent in June 2013; and WHEREAS, In addition, Dr. Perez has been an adjunct professor at Texas A&M University--Kingsville and The University of Texas of the Permian Basin, and he is currently an adjunct professor in the Cooperative Superintendent Program at The University of Texas at Austin; he was the first Hispanic to be elected to the Legislative Council of the University Interscholastic League, and in 2006, he was one of five finalists for Texas Superintendent of the Year; he is a Distinguished Alumnus of New Mexico Highlands University and a member of that school's Athletic Hall of Fame, and in 2013, he was inducted into the National Hispanic Hall of Honor; and WHEREAS, Dr. Perez's dedication, professionalism, and commitment to excellence have greatly benefited the students of all the districts where he has worked and earned him the respect and admiration of his fellow educators, and he may indeed reflect with pride on a career well-spent as he embarks upon the next exciting chapter of his life; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Sylvester Perez on his retirement as superintendent of the San Antonio Independent School District and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. Perez as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
