5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Generations of students have achieved their dream of |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, During the 1960s, three federal initiatives |

9 | 10 | | designed to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds, Upward |

10 | 11 | | Bound, Talent Search, and Special Services for Disadvantaged |
---|
11 | 12 | | Students, came to be known as the TRIO programs; today, TRIO's eight |

12 | 13 | | programs help traditional students, displaced workers, and |
---|
13 | 14 | | veterans attend college, and some 840,000 low-income Americans |
---|
14 | 15 | | benefit from TRIO projects at more than 1,000 colleges and |
---|
15 | 16 | | universities across the nation; and |

16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, TRIO at UT-Arlington serves both current university |
---|
17 | 18 | | students and secondary school students who aspire to attend |

18 | 19 | | college; its programs include Educational Talent Search, which |

19 | 20 | | provides free college, career, and financial aid information to |
---|
20 | 21 | | 1,000 Texas junior high and high school students each year, while |

21 | 22 | | Upward Bound and the Upward Bound Math and Science Center help |
---|
22 | 23 | | prepare high school students for college work; and |

23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Once students are admitted to UT-Arlington, they can |

24 | 25 | | count on the assistance of TRIO-Student Support Services, which |

25 | 26 | | since 1976 has offered free academic assistance to low-income or |

26 | 27 | | first-generation students; students who wish to pursue their |
---|
27 | 28 | | education beyond a bachelor's degree may take advantage of the |
---|
28 | 29 | | McNair Scholars Program, which helps undergraduates with the |
---|
29 | 30 | | graduate school admission process and prepares them for graduate |
---|
30 | 31 | | study; and |

31 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Taken together, these worthwhile programs have |

32 | 33 | | helped countless young Texans to pursue the dream of a college |

33 | 34 | | education, giving them the tools they need to achieve a prosperous, |

34 | 35 | | productive, and fulfilling life; now, therefore, be it |

35 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

36 | 37 | | Legislature hereby commend the TRIO programs at The University of |

37 | 38 | | Texas at Arlington and extend to the directors, staff members, and |
---|
38 | 39 | | participants in these programs sincere best wishes for continued |
