H.R. No. 628 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Generations of students have achieved their dream of a college degree with the help of the TRIO programs at The University of Texas at Arlington; and WHEREAS, During the 1960s, three federal initiatives designed to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds, Upward Bound, Talent Search, and Special Services for Disadvantaged Students, came to be known as the TRIO programs; today, TRIO's eight programs help traditional students, displaced workers, and veterans attend college, and some 840,000 low-income Americans benefit from TRIO projects at more than 1,000 colleges and universities across the nation; and WHEREAS, TRIO at UT-Arlington serves both current university students and secondary school students who aspire to attend college; its programs include Educational Talent Search, which provides free college, career, and financial aid information to 1,000 Texas junior high and high school students each year, while Upward Bound and the Upward Bound Math and Science Center help prepare high school students for college work; and WHEREAS, Once students are admitted to UT-Arlington, they can count on the assistance of TRIO-Student Support Services, which since 1976 has offered free academic assistance to low-income or first-generation students; students who wish to pursue their education beyond a bachelor's degree may take advantage of the McNair Scholars Program, which helps undergraduates with the graduate school admission process and prepares them for graduate study; and WHEREAS, Taken together, these worthwhile programs have helped countless young Texans to pursue the dream of a college education, giving them the tools they need to achieve a prosperous, productive, and fulfilling life; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby commend the TRIO programs at The University of Texas at Arlington and extend to the directors, staff members, and participants in these programs sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for The University of Texas at Arlington as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
