a college degree with the help of the TRIO programs at The
University of Texas at Arlington; and
WHEREAS, During the 1960s, three federal initiatives
designed to help students from disadvantaged backgrounds, Upward
Bound, Talent Search, and Special Services for Disadvantaged
Students, came to be known as the TRIO programs; today, TRIO's eight
programs help traditional students, displaced workers, and
veterans attend college, and some 840,000 low-income Americans
benefit from TRIO projects at more than 1,000 colleges and
 universities across the nation; and
WHEREAS, TRIO at UT-Arlington serves both current university
students and secondary school students who aspire to attend
college; its programs include Educational Talent Search, which
provides free college, career, and financial aid information to
1,000 Texas junior high and high school students each year, while
Upward Bound and the Upward Bound Math and Science Center help
prepare high school students for college work; and
WHEREAS, Once students are admitted to UT-Arlington, they can
count on the assistance of TRIO-Student Support Services, which
since 1976 has offered free academic assistance to low-income or
first-generation students; students who wish to pursue their

McNair Scholars Program, which helps undergraduates with the
graduate school admission process and prepares them for graduate
 study; and
WHEREAS, Taken together, these worthwhile programs have
helped countless young Texans to pursue the dream of a college
education, giving them the tools they need to achieve a prosperous,
productive, and fulfilling life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
