5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Jody Nelsen of Edinburg has positively impacted the |

7 | 8 | | the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley Board of Directors; and |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Nelsen obtained a bachelor's degree in business |

9 | 10 | | administration from Loyola University in 1990 and went on to attend |
---|
10 | 11 | | The University of Texas at Dallas, where she earned her MBA in 1997; |
---|
11 | 12 | | after serving as associate and interim vice president for business |
---|
12 | 13 | | affairs at UT-Dallas, she became executive vice president for |
---|
13 | 14 | | finance and administration at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi; |
---|
14 | 15 | | when her husband, Dr. Robert Nelsen, was named president of The |
---|
15 | 16 | | University of Texas-Pan American, she retired and moved with him to |
---|
16 | 17 | | Edinburg, which led to her involvement with the Food Bank of the Rio |

17 | 18 | | Grande Valley; and |

18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Every week this notable organization serves more |

19 | 20 | | than 42,000 meals to residents in need in Hidalgo, Willacy, and |

20 | 21 | | Cameron Counties; founded in 1983, the Food Bank is now the 36th |

21 | 22 | | largest in the country and the 5th largest in Texas, and it is |
---|
22 | 23 | | benefiting many people in the Rio Grande Valley by providing vital |
---|
23 | 24 | | food assistance, nutrition education, and access to community |
---|
24 | 25 | | services; ably supporting its mission, Ms. Nelsen has been an |
---|
25 | 26 | | active member of the group's board of directors for four years and |
---|
26 | 27 | | is currently in her second year as president; and |
---|
27 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Through her efforts with the Food Bank, Ms. Nelsen |
---|
28 | 29 | | also became involved with the UT-Pan American Student Food Pantry |
---|
29 | 30 | | Advisory Board; each week the pantry's new campus facility provides |
---|
30 | 31 | | some 150 students with meals, helping them to meet a basic need so |
---|
31 | 32 | | they can better focus on their studies and prepare for the future; |

33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, The selfless contributions of community leaders |

34 | 35 | | improve the lives of others in countless ways, and the citizens of |

35 | 36 | | Edinburg and the Rio Grande Valley are indeed fortunate to count |

36 | 37 | | Jody Nelsen among their fellow residents; now, therefore, be it |

37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |

38 | 39 | | Legislature hereby commend Jody Nelsen for her exemplary leadership |
