45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, Jody Nelsen of Edinburg has positively impacted the
67 lives of myriad people through her important work as president of
78 the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley Board of Directors; and
89 WHEREAS, Ms. Nelsen obtained a bachelor's degree in business
910 administration from Loyola University in 1990 and went on to attend
1011 The University of Texas at Dallas, where she earned her MBA in 1997;
1112 after serving as associate and interim vice president for business
1213 affairs at UT-Dallas, she became executive vice president for
1314 finance and administration at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi;
1415 when her husband, Dr. Robert Nelsen, was named president of The
1516 University of Texas-Pan American, she retired and moved with him to
1617 Edinburg, which led to her involvement with the Food Bank of the Rio
1718 Grande Valley; and
1819 WHEREAS, Every week this notable organization serves more
1920 than 42,000 meals to residents in need in Hidalgo, Willacy, and
2021 Cameron Counties; founded in 1983, the Food Bank is now the 36th
2122 largest in the country and the 5th largest in Texas, and it is
2223 benefiting many people in the Rio Grande Valley by providing vital
2324 food assistance, nutrition education, and access to community
2425 services; ably supporting its mission, Ms. Nelsen has been an
2526 active member of the group's board of directors for four years and
2627 is currently in her second year as president; and
2728 WHEREAS, Through her efforts with the Food Bank, Ms. Nelsen
2829 also became involved with the UT-Pan American Student Food Pantry
2930 Advisory Board; each week the pantry's new campus facility provides
3031 some 150 students with meals, helping them to meet a basic need so
3132 they can better focus on their studies and prepare for the future;
3233 and
3334 WHEREAS, The selfless contributions of community leaders
3435 improve the lives of others in countless ways, and the citizens of
3536 Edinburg and the Rio Grande Valley are indeed fortunate to count
3637 Jody Nelsen among their fellow residents; now, therefore, be it
3738 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
3839 Legislature hereby commend Jody Nelsen for her exemplary leadership
3940 as president of the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley Board of
4041 Directors and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued
4142 success; and, be it further
4243 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4344 prepared for Ms. Nelsen as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4445 House of Representatives.
