56 WHEREAS, In a season-long demonstration of skill and
67 determination, the football team from Canutillo High School won the

8- strict title and became the first El Paso-area school to reach the
8+ district title and became the first El Paso-area school to reach the
99 semifinals of the University Interscholastic League state
1010 playoffs; and
1111 WHEREAS, Armed with a stout defense and a high-powered
1212 offensive attack, the Eagles rebounded from an early-season loss to
1313 win 13 straight contests; Canutillo bested each of its league
1414 opponents in the regular season to capture the District 1-5A crown,
1515 and the team finished the year with an impressive 13-2 overall
1616 record; and
1717 WHEREAS, In the playoffs, the Canutillo players proved they
1818 were more than ready to contend for the 5A Division 2 state
1919 championship, reeling off comfortable wins over Ysleta and Lake
2020 View High Schools in their opening postseason matchups; the Eagles
2121 then battled their way to a last-minute victory over Azle High
2222 School to claim the regional championship before triumphing over
2323 Everman High School by a score of 17-14 to secure the school's
2424 first-ever berth in the state semifinals; there, the team fought
2525 valiantly but ultimately fell to eventual state champion Ennis High
2626 School to bring a memorable season to a close; and
2727 WHEREAS, Excelling with a true team effort, the Eagles
2828 received valuable contributions from each member of the roster;
2929 several players were recognized for their outstanding play, with
3030 Ben Galaviz, Johnny Dunlap, Javier Gomez, and Bo Brooks each
3131 signing scholarships to play football at the collegiate level;
3232 moreover, teammate Jonathan Vogt was named to the Texas Sports
3333 Writers Association All-State Team for Class 5A, and he will
3434 continue his career as a student-athlete at the United States Air
3535 Force Academy; the dedicated athletes of the Canutillo High
3636 football team were guided by head coach Scott Brooks, who inspired
3737 them to play to their full potential throughout an exciting and
3838 history-making season; and
3939 WHEREAS, With their notable gridiron accomplishments, the
4040 Eagles have established a new standard of success for El Paso teams
4141 and earned the admiration of their fellow students and their many
4242 community supporters, and they may reflect with pride on a job well
4343 done; now, therefore, be it
4444 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
4545 Legislature hereby congratulate the Canutillo High School Eagles on
4646 their success during the 2014 football season and extend to the
4747 team's athletes, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for the
4848 future; and, be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5050 prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5151 House of Representatives.
