H.R. No. 855 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, In a season-long demonstration of skill and determination, the football team from Canutillo High School won the di strict title and became the first El Paso-area school to reach the semifinals of the University Interscholastic League state playoffs; and WHEREAS, Armed with a stout defense and a high-powered offensive attack, the Eagles rebounded from an early-season loss to win 13 straight contests; Canutillo bested each of its league opponents in the regular season to capture the District 1-5A crown, and the team finished the year with an impressive 13-2 overall record; and WHEREAS, In the playoffs, the Canutillo players proved they were more than ready to contend for the 5A Division 2 state championship, reeling off comfortable wins over Ysleta and Lake View High Schools in their opening postseason matchups; the Eagles then battled their way to a last-minute victory over Azle High School to claim the regional championship before triumphing over Everman High School by a score of 17-14 to secure the school's first-ever berth in the state semifinals; there, the team fought valiantly but ultimately fell to eventual state champion Ennis High School to bring a memorable season to a close; and WHEREAS, Excelling with a true team effort, the Eagles received valuable contributions from each member of the roster; several players were recognized for their outstanding play, with Ben Galaviz, Johnny Dunlap, Javier Gomez, and Bo Brooks each signing scholarships to play football at the collegiate level; moreover, teammate Jonathan Vogt was named to the Texas Sports Writers Association All-State Team for Class 5A, and he will continue his career as a student-athlete at the United States Air Force Academy; the dedicated athletes of the Canutillo High football team were guided by head coach Scott Brooks, who inspired them to play to their full potential throughout an exciting and history-making season; and WHEREAS, With their notable gridiron accomplishments, the Eagles have established a new standard of success for El Paso teams and earned the admiration of their fellow students and their many community supporters, and they may reflect with pride on a job well done; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate the Canutillo High School Eagles on their success during the 2014 football season and extend to the team's athletes, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
