H.R. No. 897 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, La Union del Pueblo Entero has been working in behalf of colonia residents in the Rio Grande Valley for more than a decade; and WHEREAS, A nonprofit organization formed in 2003 as an extension of the United Farm Workers movement, LUPE endeavors to unite low-income and underrepresented citizens of the community to advance their standing on the social, economic, and political stages; the group, a member of the RGV Equal Voice Network funded by the Marguerite Casey Foundation, is focused on improving the living conditions, health care opportunities, and immigrant rights for colonia residents in the Rio Grande Valley; and WHEREAS, Under the able guidance of its executive director, Juanita Valdez-Cox, LUPE has established five offices across Hidalgo County; in addition to serving as an organizational model, LUPE offers a variety of social services to assist its members, including help with immigration applications, income tax returns, and advocacy for workers' rights; and WHEREAS, LUPE is making a lasting and positive difference in the lives of colonia residents in Hidalgo County and beyond, and all those involved indeed merit special recognition for their efforts to create a brighter future in the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas Legislature hereby honor La Union del Pueblo Entero for its service in the Rio Grande Valley and extend to LUPE's leaders and members sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for LUPE as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
