| 14 | 14 | | disabilities. |

| 15 | 15 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 16 | 16 | | SECTION 1. Section 502.254(a), Transportation Code, is |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | amended to read as follows: |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | (a) Except as provided by Section 504.202, the [The] fee for |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | a registration year for registration of a trailer, travel trailer, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | or semitrailer with a gross weight of 6,000 pounds or less is |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | $45.00. |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | SECTION 2. Section 504.202, Transportation Code, is amended |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | by amending Subsections (a) and (b) and adding Subsections (a-1) |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and (j) to read as follows: |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | (a) A person entitled to specialty license plates under this |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | section may register, for the person's own use, and [one vehicle] |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | without payment of any fee paid for or at the time of registration |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | except the fee for the license plates: |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | (1) one motor vehicle; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | (2) one trailer, travel trailer, or semitrailer. |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | (a-1) Registration under this section is valid for one year. |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | (b) A veteran of the United States armed forces is entitled |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | to register, for the person's own use, [motor] vehicles under this |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | section if: |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | (1) the person has suffered, as a result of military |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | service: |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | (A) at least a 50 percent service-connected |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | disability; or |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | (B) a 40 percent service-connected disability |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | because of the amputation of a lower extremity; |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | (2) the person receives compensation from the United |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | States because of the disability; and |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | (3) the [motor] vehicle[: |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | [(A)] is owned by the person[;] and: |
|---|
| 45 | 45 | | (A) if the vehicle is a motor vehicle, [(B)] has |
|---|
| 46 | 46 | | a gross vehicle weight of 18,000 pounds or less; or |
|---|
| 47 | 47 | | (B) if the vehicle is a trailer, travel trailer, |
|---|
| 48 | 48 | | or semitrailer, has a gross weight of 6,000 pounds or less. |
|---|
| 49 | 49 | | (j) In this section, "motor vehicle," "semitrailer," |
|---|
| 50 | 50 | | "trailer," "travel trailer," and "vehicle" have the meanings |
|---|
| 51 | 51 | | assigned by Section 502.001. |
|---|
| 52 | 52 | | SECTION 3. This Act applies only to a registration year that |
|---|
| 53 | 53 | | begins on or after the effective date of this Act. |
|---|
| 54 | 54 | | SECTION 4. This Act takes effect January 1, 2016. |
