4	4		SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
5	5		WHEREAS, In 2015, King Ranch, Incorporated, celebrates the
6	6		100th anniversary of its Main House, the ancestral home of the King
7	7		Ranch family; and
8	8		WHEREAS, In 1854, Henrietta Chamberlain King came to King
9	9		Ranch as the young bride of Captain Richard King, and she
10	10		established their home in a simple adobe structure on the banks of
11	11		Santa Gertrudis Creek; and
12	12		WHEREAS, That original dwelling was later replaced by a frame
13	13		cottage, and then by a two-story, Southern-style plantation home,
14	14		which burned to the ground in 1912; three years later, in 1915,
15	15		Mrs. King, who had been widowed in 1885, her daughter Alice, and
16	16		Alice's husband, Robert Justus Kleberg Sr., finished building the
17	17		Spanish-style Main House of the present day; and
18	18		WHEREAS, The new home, which has also served as the ranch
19	19		headquarters, was designed by Adams & Adams of San Antonio with the
20	20		interior being designed by Tiffany Studios of New York; while the
21	21		37,000-square-foot, 27-room structure is grand, dominating the
22	22		surrounding landscape, the building was thoughtfully designed to
23	23		accommodate the family, cowboys, and travelers alike; and
24	24		WHEREAS, In 1961, the United States Department of the
25	25		Interior listed King Ranch and the King Ranch Main House in the
26	26		National Register of Historic Places; the cultural significance of
27	27		the Main House was further acknowledged in 1980, when it received an
28	28		Official Texas Historical Marker from the Texas Historical
29	29		Commission; and
30	30		WHEREAS, Seven generations of the King Ranch family have
31	31		called the Main House home, and it has welcomed a host of
32	32		distinguished guests, among them prominent citizens and heads of
33	33		state; today, it remains a gathering place for the family, as well
34	34		as a monument to the memories of Captain Richard King and Henrietta
35	35		King; and
36	36		WHEREAS, An iconic structure, the King Ranch Main House is an
37	37		enduring reminder of the rich ranching heritage of the Lone Star
38	38		State, and it is indeed fitting to acknowledge its role in Texas
39	39		history at this time; now, therefore, be it
40	40		RESOLVED, That the 84th Legislature of the State of Texas
41	41		hereby commemorate the centennial of the King Ranch Main House and
42	42		extend sincere best wishes for the future to the King Ranch family
43	43		and to all the employees of King Ranch, Inc.; and, be it further
44	44		RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
45	45		prepared for King Ranch, Incorporated, as an expression of high
46	46		regard by the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
