54 SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
65 WHEREAS, Terry County grows more grapes than all the other
76 counties in Texas combined; in 2013, there were approximately 800
87 acres of vineyards in the county, constituting more than 80 percent
98 of the grapes in the state; as many as 3,000 acres of grapes are
109 expected to be planted in the county by the end of 2015 and 10,000
1110 acres in the coming years; and
1211 WHEREAS, Terry County is part of the High Plains region,
1312 which endures many hot days but, at an altitude of over 3,600 feet,
1413 enjoys cool summer nights; this drop in temperature slows the pace
1514 of ripening and enables the grapes to mature over the growing
1615 season, producing a better juice for wine production; and
1716 WHEREAS, The region is extraordinarily windy, which reduces
1817 problems related to humidity, such as mildew; its soil is sandy clay
1918 over a bed of caliche, and these layers allow good drainage down to
2019 the bedrock; and
2120 WHEREAS, Many Terry County farmers are agricultural
2221 producers whose families have been in the area for generations;
2322 they possess unparalleled knowledge of the land and the requisite
2423 work ethic to successfully bring a crop to maturity; with each
2524 growing season, more acreage is planted with grapes and the farming
2625 community's knowledge of grape growing also increases; and
2726 WHEREAS, The business community in the county fully supports
2827 the grape-growing industry, and a local chamber of commerce held
2928 the first Taste of Terry County Vineyard Festival in 2013; and
3029 WHEREAS, An increasing number of publications, such as the
3130 Wall Street Journal, are recognizing Terry County for its
3231 development into a producer of world-class wine grapes; now,
3332 therefore, be it
3433 RESOLVED, That the 84th Legislature of the State of Texas
3534 hereby designate Terry County as the official Grape Capital of
3635 Texas; and, be it further
3736 RESOLVED, That in accordance with the provisions of Section
3837 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect
3938 until the 10th anniversary of its designation.
