| 6 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Terry County grows more grapes than all the other |
|---|
| 7 | 6 | | counties in Texas combined; in 2013, there were approximately 800 |
|---|
| 8 | 7 | | acres of vineyards in the county, constituting more than 80 percent |
|---|
| 9 | 8 | | of the grapes in the state; as many as 3,000 acres of grapes are |
|---|
| 10 | 9 | | expected to be planted in the county by the end of 2015 and 10,000 |
|---|
| 11 | 10 | | acres in the coming years; and |
|---|
| 12 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Terry County is part of the High Plains region, |
|---|
| 13 | 12 | | which endures many hot days but, at an altitude of over 3,600 feet, |
|---|
| 14 | 13 | | enjoys cool summer nights; this drop in temperature slows the pace |
|---|
| 15 | 14 | | of ripening and enables the grapes to mature over the growing |
|---|
| 16 | 15 | | season, producing a better juice for wine production; and |
|---|
| 17 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The region is extraordinarily windy, which reduces |
|---|
| 18 | 17 | | problems related to humidity, such as mildew; its soil is sandy clay |
|---|
| 19 | 18 | | over a bed of caliche, and these layers allow good drainage down to |
|---|
| 20 | 19 | | the bedrock; and |
|---|
| 21 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Many Terry County farmers are agricultural |
|---|
| 22 | 21 | | producers whose families have been in the area for generations; |
|---|
| 23 | 22 | | they possess unparalleled knowledge of the land and the requisite |
|---|
| 24 | 23 | | work ethic to successfully bring a crop to maturity; with each |
|---|
| 25 | 24 | | growing season, more acreage is planted with grapes and the farming |
|---|
| 26 | 25 | | community's knowledge of grape growing also increases; and |
|---|
| 27 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The business community in the county fully supports |
|---|
| 28 | 27 | | the grape-growing industry, and a local chamber of commerce held |
|---|
| 29 | 28 | | the first Taste of Terry County Vineyard Festival in 2013; and |
|---|
| 30 | 29 | | WHEREAS, An increasing number of publications, such as the |
|---|
| 31 | 30 | | Wall Street Journal, are recognizing Terry County for its |
|---|
| 32 | 31 | | development into a producer of world-class wine grapes; now, |
|---|
| 33 | 32 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 34 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the 84th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|---|
| 35 | 34 | | hereby designate Terry County as the official Grape Capital of |
|---|
| 36 | 35 | | Texas; and, be it further |
|---|
| 37 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That in accordance with the provisions of Section |
|---|
| 38 | 37 | | 391.003(e), Government Code, this designation remain in effect |
|---|
| 39 | 38 | | until the 10th anniversary of its designation. |
