5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. G. M. Cox is retiring as the chief of police in |

6 | 6 | | Murphy on July 1, 2015, drawing to a close an outstanding career in |
---|
7 | 7 | | law enforcement that has spanned more than four decades; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, After serving as a security officer in the United |
---|
9 | 9 | | States Air Force from 1972 to 1978, Dr. Cox received a bachelor's |
---|
10 | 10 | | degree summa cum laude in law enforcement and police science from |
---|
11 | 11 | | Sam Houston State University in 1979; he began his civilian career |
---|
12 | 12 | | in 1980 as a deputy sheriff in Montgomery County, and from 1981 to |
---|
13 | 13 | | 1989, he was the chief of police and the city administrator of Oak |
---|
14 | 14 | | Ridge North; during that time, he also earned a master's degree in |
---|
15 | 15 | | criminal justice management from the university; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Cox was the chief of police in Lamesa from 1989 |
---|
17 | 17 | | to 1993, and then the chief of police in Corsicana from 1993 to |
---|
18 | 18 | | 2008; he became Murphy's chief of police in 2008, and under his |
---|
19 | 19 | | leadership, the Murphy Police Department has attained recognized |
---|
20 | 20 | | status from the Texas Police Chiefs Association, and the community |
---|
21 | 21 | | has scored among the top 10 safest cities in Texas, according to the |
---|
22 | 22 | | crime reporting system of the Federal Bureau of Investigation; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, A graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation |
---|
24 | 24 | | National Academy, Dr. Cox has served as an adjunct instructor in |
---|
25 | 25 | | criminal justice at several institutions of higher learning in |
---|
26 | 26 | | Texas, and he is also a court qualified mediator; in 2011, he earned |
---|
27 | 27 | | a doctorate in public and urban administration from The University |
---|
28 | 28 | | of Texas at Arlington, and his dissertation, "Crisis in Police |
---|
29 | 29 | | Recruitment: Public Service Motivation and Changes in Generational |
---|
30 | 30 | | Preferences," has become a resource for police departments across |
---|
31 | 31 | | Texas; following his retirement from the Murphy Police Department, |
---|
32 | 32 | | he will become an assistant professor and director of the graduate |
---|
33 | 33 | | program in public administration at Tarleton State University; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Cox brings dedication, professionalism, and a |
---|
35 | 35 | | commitment to excellence to each of his endeavors, and he may indeed |
---|
36 | 36 | | reflect with pride on his many achievements throughout his more |
---|
37 | 37 | | than 40 years in law enforcement as he takes on new challenges and |
---|
38 | 38 | | opportunities in academia; now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the 84th Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
40 | 40 | | hereby congratulate Dr. G. M. Cox on his retirement as the Murphy |
---|
41 | 41 | | chief of police and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued |
---|
42 | 42 | | success and happiness; and, be it further |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
44 | 44 | | prepared for Dr. Cox as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
---|
45 | 45 | | House of Representatives and Senate. |
