11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 100
22 WHEREAS, Janey and Melvin Lack of Victoria are being
33 presented with the Distinguished Citizen Award by the South Texas
44 Council of the Boy Scouts of America at a gala dinner on February
55 12, 2015, and this occasion offers a fitting opportunity to
66 celebrate their extraordinary record of community service; and
77 WHEREAS, An Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the
88 Arrow as a boy, Melvin Lack graduated from Rice University and
99 the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration; for
1010 many years, he ran his family's chain of furniture stores, which
1111 was based in Victoria; he has served as president, chair, and
1212 treasurer of the board of the National Home Furnishing
1313 Association, as a board member of the Victoria Chamber of
1414 Commerce, and as a founding director of the Victoria Business and
1515 Education Coalition; and
1616 WHEREAS, Mr. Lack's extensive community service also
1717 includes leadership roles on the boards of such organizations and
1818 institutions as the Victoria Symphony Society, the Victoria
1919 Regional Museum Association, the Citizens Medical Center, the
2020 Victoria Planning Commission, United Way, Congregation B'nai
2121 Israel, and the University of Houston-Victoria; and
2222 WHEREAS, Janey Lack earned an undergraduate degree from
2323 the University of Michigan and, like her husband, an M.B.A. from
2424 Harvard; the first woman to work as a management consultant for
2525 McKinsey & Company, she served as vice president of marketing and
2626 advertising for Lack's Stores, Incorporated, from 1992 to 2011;
2727 deeply engaged in civic affairs, she has served the city of
2828 Victoria as a member of the city council and as chair of the Parks
2929 and Recreation Commission, the Metropolitan Planning
3030 Organization, the Tax Increment Finance Board, and the Victoria
3131 Symphony Society Endowment Trust; and
3232 WHEREAS, Mrs. Lack's statewide contributions include
3333 service as chair of the Educational Economic Policy Center, the
3434 Texas Council on Vocational Education, and the Governor's Task
3535 Force on Literacy; she is a life member of the College of
3636 Education Foundation Advisory Council for The University of
3737 Texas at Austin, and she currently serves the University of
3838 Michigan as a member of the Dean's Advisory Council for the
3939 College of Literature, Science, and the Arts; she is a former
4040 chair of the alumni association's board of directors; and
4141 WHEREAS, Recognized repeatedly for outstanding civic
4242 leadership, Mr. Lack has received the Jaycee Distinguished
4343 Citizens Award and the Golden Diploma from the Victoria Chamber
4444 of Commerce, while Mrs. Lack has received an Outstanding Citizen
4545 Award from the Victoria Rotary Club, the South Texas Woman Award,
4646 and the Victoria Women of Achievement Award, among other
4747 accolades; and
4848 WHEREAS, Married for nearly half a century, the couple have
4949 been blessed with a daughter, Julie, and two sons and a
5050 daughter-in-law, David and Jeffrey and his wife, Cinda, as well
5151 as five grandchildren, Clara, Ellie, Grace, Mason, and
5252 Mackenzie; and
5353 WHEREAS, Melvin and Janey Lack have been extraordinarily
5454 generous with their time, talent, and expertise over the years,
5555 and their tireless efforts in behalf of others have greatly
5656 benefited the city of Victoria and the State of Texas; now,
5757 therefore, be it
5858 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
5959 Legislature, hereby congratulate Janey and Melvin Lack on their
6060 receipt of the Distinguished Citizen Award from the South Texas
6161 Council of the Boy Scouts of America and extend to them sincere
6262 best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
6363 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be
6464 prepared for Janey and Melvin Lack as an expression of high
6565 regard from the Texas Senate.
