SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 100 WHEREAS, Janey and Melvin Lack of Victoria are being presented with the Distinguished Citizen Award by the South Texas Council of the Boy Scouts of America at a gala dinner on February 12, 2015, and this occasion offers a fitting opportunity to celebrate their extraordinary record of community service; and WHEREAS, An Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow as a boy, Melvin Lack graduated from Rice University and the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration; for many years, he ran his family's chain of furniture stores, which was based in Victoria; he has served as president, chair, and treasurer of the board of the National Home Furnishing Association, as a board member of the Victoria Chamber of Commerce, and as a founding director of the Victoria Business and Education Coalition; and WHEREAS, Mr. Lack's extensive community service also includes leadership roles on the boards of such organizations and institutions as the Victoria Symphony Society, the Victoria Regional Museum Association, the Citizens Medical Center, the Victoria Planning Commission, United Way, Congregation B'nai Israel, and the University of Houston-Victoria; and WHEREAS, Janey Lack earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan and, like her husband, an M.B.A. from Harvard; the first woman to work as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company, she served as vice president of marketing and advertising for Lack's Stores, Incorporated, from 1992 to 2011; deeply engaged in civic affairs, she has served the city of Victoria as a member of the city council and as chair of the Parks and Recreation Commission, the Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Tax Increment Finance Board, and the Victoria Symphony Society Endowment Trust; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Lack's statewide contributions include service as chair of the Educational Economic Policy Center, the Texas Council on Vocational Education, and the Governor's Task Force on Literacy; she is a life member of the College of Education Foundation Advisory Council for The University of Texas at Austin, and she currently serves the University of Michigan as a member of the Dean's Advisory Council for the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts; she is a former chair of the alumni association's board of directors; and WHEREAS, Recognized repeatedly for outstanding civic leadership, Mr. Lack has received the Jaycee Distinguished Citizens Award and the Golden Diploma from the Victoria Chamber of Commerce, while Mrs. Lack has received an Outstanding Citizen Award from the Victoria Rotary Club, the South Texas Woman Award, and the Victoria Women of Achievement Award, among other accolades; and WHEREAS, Married for nearly half a century, the couple have been blessed with a daughter, Julie, and two sons and a daughter-in-law, David and Jeffrey and his wife, Cinda, as well as five grandchildren, Clara, Ellie, Grace, Mason, and Mackenzie; and WHEREAS, Melvin and Janey Lack have been extraordinarily generous with their time, talent, and expertise over the years, and their tireless efforts in behalf of others have greatly benefited the city of Victoria and the State of Texas; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th Legislature, hereby congratulate Janey and Melvin Lack on their receipt of the Distinguished Citizen Award from the South Texas Council of the Boy Scouts of America and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be prepared for Janey and Melvin Lack as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
