SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1009 In Memory of Gilberto Garza WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and commemorates the life of Judge Gilberto Garza, who died June 26, 2014; and WHEREAS, Gilberto Garza was born in Weslaco to Sotero and Herlinda Garza; he served the nation with distinction during World War II as a demolition specialist with the United States Army in France and Germany; he answered his country's call again during the Korean War as a member of the United States Air Force; and WHEREAS, He was a businessman and rancher for many years, but he was best known in his Weslaco community for his work in the justice system; he served for 18 years as the justice of the peace for Precinct 1, Place 2, and he was a municipal court judge for 17 years; and WHEREAS, Judge Garza was also active in a variety of civic organizations, including the Lions Club, the Weslaco Chamber of Commerce, the Mexican American Chamber of Commerce, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Catholic War Veterans; he was a member of Saint Martin De Porres Catholic Church; and WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he gave generously to others, and his wisdom, warmth, and valued counsel will not be forgotten; and WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Judge Gilberto Garza; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Gilberto Garza.
