SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 1070 In Memory of Maria Gonzalez Kennedy WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Maria Gonzalez Kennedy, who died May 14, 2015, at the age of 86; and WHEREAS, Maria Gonzalez was born on September 29, 1928, in Harlingen; she became a longtime Austin resident who was admired for her many contributions to the city; and WHEREAS, In 1957, she and her husband, Abraham Kennedy, opened El Gallo restaurant on South Congress Avenue; she was a proud owner who greeted her customers with a smile, and the restaurant became a trademark venue in the vibrant South Austin neighborhood; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Kennedy was a distinguished leader in the community who contributed to the establishment of Austin Community College and was active with the Mexican-American Chamber of Commerce, the League of United Latin American Citizens, and numerous other civic organizations; she was a parishioner of Saint Ignatius Martyr Church; and WHEREAS, A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Maria Kennedy was beloved by many, and she will long be remembered with admiration and respect by all who were privileged to share in her life; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Maria Gonzalez Kennedy; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Maria Kennedy.
