SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 178
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to welcome
residents of Hudspeth, Culberson, Presidio, and Jeff Davis Counties
on the occasion of West Texas Counties Day at the State Capitol; and
WHEREAS, This expansive region of the Lone Star State is
known for its colorful history and breathtaking landscapes;
carefully preserved sites throughout the area tell the stories of
ancient inhabitants and of early homesteaders who settled in the
area in the years of cattle roads and steam trains; and
WHEREAS, Its history tells of great struggles and of brave
frontier men and women who helped forge the beginnings of the
region's agricultural success; and
WHEREAS, The extraordinary terrain of Hudspeth, Culberson,
Presidio, and Jeff Davis Counties varies from grassy plains to
volcanic cliffs and canyons and includes the state's tallest
mountain and highest waterfall; the area's scenic vistas include
the vast Chihuahuan Desert and two majestic mountain ranges, and
outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy many opportunities for hiking,
birding, hunting, and horseback riding; and
WHEREAS, The region is also home to a world-renowned
cultural arts community in Marfa and to the McDonald Observatory
of The University of Texas at Austin, which houses one of the
largest optical telescopes in the world; and
WHEREAS, The citizens of Hudspeth, Culberson, Presidio,
and Jeff Davis Counties are blessed with the opportunity to live
in a striking landscape with a rich history; they share a deep
appreciation for their beloved region of West Texas, and they can
indeed take pride in their unique contributions to the heritage
and culture of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th
Legislature, hereby recognize West Texas Counties Day at the
State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation sincere best
wishes for a memorable stay in Austin; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the citizens of Hudspeth, Culberson, Presidio, and Jeff Davis
Counties as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
