| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Citizens from Hill County are visiting Austin to |

| 3 | 3 | | celebrate Hill County Day at the State Capitol on February 26, |

| 4 | 4 | | 2015, and it is indeed appropriate to take this opportunity to |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | pay tribute to this notable Texas county; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Located in North Central Texas east of the Brazos |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | River, Hill County was created from a section of Navarro County |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | by an act of the state legislature on February 7, 1853; it was |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | named for Dr. George Washington Hill, a member of the Congress of |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | the Republic of Texas and secretary of war and the navy under |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | President Sam Houston; on May 14, 1853, an election was held in |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Lexington on Jack's Branch to determine the county's first public |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | officials, and later that same year, Hillsboro was platted and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | designated the county seat; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Now home to about 35,000 people, Hill County has |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | grown with the changing times while still maintaining the appeal |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | of a small rural county; the restored county courthouse in |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Hillsboro, which is listed in the National Register of Historic |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Places, serves as the center for county business, and Hill |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | College provides access to an array of high-technology academic |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | and workforce-training educational programs, presents a popular |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | performing arts series, and is the site of the Texas Heritage |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Museum with its extensive collection of Audie Murphy artifacts |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and a comprehensive library and archive on the Civil War; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Of special interest to Texas music fans |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | everywhere, Hill County is the birthplace of legendary singer and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | songwriter Willie Nelson, who was born in Abbott and graduated |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | from high school there; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Hill County communities host a number of special |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | events each year, among them the Hill County Fair and the Cotton |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Pickin' Fair in Hillsboro, Pioneer Days in Whitney, the Cinco de |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Mayo Celebration in Itasca, and Hubbard City Trade Days, and |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | these festivities showcase the county's hospitality, |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | agricultural roots, scenic beauty, and heritage; residents and |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | visitors alike also enjoy the myriad recreational opportunities |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | offered by Lake Whitney State Park; and |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | WHEREAS, Those who call Hill County home may take |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | justifiable pride in their county's distinctive character and |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | the many qualities that make it such an outstanding place in |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | which to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 84th |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 26, 2015, as Hill County |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | sincere best wishes for an enjoyable stay in Austin. |
